I don't understand why China on the one hand is eager to publish about new Z-10 units but new J-10 and Flanker units are being kept secret up to the point that photo's of newly inducted J-10B's on the internet are not allow to show their unit numbers.

I don't understand why China on the one hand is eager to publish about new Z-10 units but new J-10 and Flanker units are being kept secret up to the point that photo's of newly inducted J-10B's on the internet are not allow to show their unit numbers.

I think fighter/bomber aircraft are considered to be more important strategically because knowing where they are stationed at and/or how many units there are can definitely be important especially in overall planning for say, an operation, OTOH, helicopters are really only a regional asset and can't really be utilized in say territorial disputes without the help of naval vessels.

Z10s are cleared for export, J10s are not.

I think the Americans and some other world powers already know where the new J-10 and Flanker units are located through satellite imagery, communication intercept and radar tracking.

Same reason T-96 gets so much publicity. If China were forced to use WZ-10 and T-96 in combat, it's probably all-out war. Secrecy doesn't matter by then.
