Oh No, J10B going back to AL-31F like J15.

Classic case of taking one step forward and then followed by 2 steps backward.

I hope this is not the Chinese way of doing things.

At most its 2 steps forward and one step back. If there is an issue with the WS10A, it would be far better to switch engines rather than stick with the WS10A and risk crashes.

All the big players had trouble with either first high performance turbofans, so even if there is a set back with the WS10A, it would only mean China has continued the trend rather than buck it and be the first to get it flawlessly in the first go.

Thinking back, I do wonder if that twin seat flanker crash in ShanDong a few months back might have something to do with both the engine changes in the J15/J10B as well as the unusually long 6 months the Liaoning spent tied up at pier.

The initial reports listed that as a Su27UKB, but the pictures showed a yellowish colour which pointed to primers and the plane being a new built prototype.

I do wonder if that was a WS10A powered J11BS, J15S or J16 that went down because of engine trouble, and that was what triggered the engine change and delays, because only something of that magnitude would see such a wholesale reversal after the WS10A appeared to have started replacing AL31s in all new built J11Bs.

It could be that the PLA has decided to go back to the proven reliability of the AL31 for the J15 and J10B for the extra insurance since one is China's first carrier fighter and the other is a single engined bird. With SAC seeming focused on J15 production for the moment, that should give Liming ample time to find the problem and rectify it.

But considering the number of crashes all the other major powers have all suffered when they first started to move onto turbofans, even if that crash was WS10A related, the engine is still doing very well in comparison, and after they had overcome the initial troubles, all subsequent turbofan designs have all progressed far more smoothly, so when China does finally get the WS10A perfected, that should give them all the skills, tools and experience to make their next turbofans with far greater speed and confidence.

I thought we heard that line five years ago? Would it continue like this for 5 more years waiting for it to be perfected? Well, who knows? it's always something....

Considering it was only publicly unveiled 5 years ago, I doubt that.

Did anyone see these photos before?

To admit I'm not 100% sure but I remember the same scene - esp. the J-7 behind - taken on 14. March this year ... so IMO this is simply an old image of one of the four pre-serials we already know.

Ok .. but then You should explain why we should take that statement seriously ??? ... since that image clearly shows a J-10B single seater and no trainer for sure !
