To be fair and open, every vendor should have their equipment tested in a facility and environment determined by the security agency of concerned government. The relevant agency can make their own decision through their own eyes and hands.US just shot themselves big time in the face/foot. There are 2 developments.
First, Huawei had been advocating a fair, sensible, unified and objective enhanced security standard for 5G networks since at least last year. This is seen to improve, reassure and lessen politicization of 5G network rollout.

Now apparently German government is leaning toward adapting Huawei's approach to ensuring privacy and security through enhancement of security regulatory requirements and stricter compliance for all network operator and service provider. As more countries take this approach, the US ability to spy and eavesdrop will be severely hampered. I guess no more eavesdropping on German chancellor's, Japanese PM's and other world leader's conversation.
Moreover, We as consumers are probably going to be the biggest beneficiary.
Huawei has actually proposed such cooperation. But I strongly doubt Trump would agree with this though.
