I have some friends in japan and their working hours is just crazy compared to other developed nations, they work from 8.30 am to 10 pm everyday even on weekends, and the unbelievable thing is that they are willing and expected to do unpaid overtime work. in other western countries the directors of the company can be charged with slavery.

That combined with the high living cost in japan, no wonder they have low fertility rate.

True to a certain extent, but a lot of those "working" hours are spent among office co-workers or bosses during dinner hours at restaurants or bars if you're the white collar worker. The wives hardly ever get to see their husbands at home to help wit h the house hold chores and child rearing.

With capitalism comes access to more convenience and more time for personal leisure for parents. Remember when our parents way of having fun is to play together with the kids or meeting with friends, relatives, and neighbors for discussions? Once capitalism is well established wealth is spent on more materialistic items (the quality of life from that material is another question), therefore the interest to paying attention to old traditions of raising a family changes the values of the traditional structure.

Indeed the US , Canada, Australia and NZ are the exception, because they are countries founded on immigration. So the people are more welcoming to immigrants than other countries not founded on immigration such as Europe.

Therefore you don't see too many social problems associated with immigration in the US compared to say France that has experienced race riots.

Japan is a unique case. I saw on TV a story that 30% of young Japanese aren't even interested in sex. It's like literally no interest in physical sex or rather indulge in alternative forms that don't involve having personal relations with the opposite sex. Years before I read that Japanese women had the highest rate of out marrying in all of Asia. I can see this creeping into other parts of Asia but not as bad because Japan tends to have a more restrictive culture and that tends to create a society that is repressed. I see it with immigrants in the US. The ones that are more restrictive with their children's lives, those children turn out to have less social skills.

That's why it's a weird mixed bag in Japan. When I said alternative forms it also includes virtual. It's sort of like video gamers spending hours everyday living life through an avatar in an online world. They enjoy life in there than in the real world.

In all fairness to Japan, it could just be semantics.

Prostitution is technically illegal in the Japanese constitution as is hardcore porn technically, the Japanese adult entertainment industry skirts this because sex is legally interpreted in a very narrow way. This means any brothel or porno that uses a sex act outside this narrow definition is legal, though it has led to all kinds of quirky fetishes like teeth brushing, tentacles and cuddling brothels.

Wealth and Capitalism is not synonymous!

Socialist Cuba has a fertility rate of 1.43 children per woman
