Iraqi improvised APC's

Have you ever seen Kurdish forces in Northern Iraq. They are the best equiped forces and are best trained, on par with special forces. All done by Americans. Thats why that region is more silent then rest of the Iraq.

If they want to they can achieve similar fate in central Iraq also. A level of mistrust is there.

Also now there are reports of insurgents using american/iraqi uniforms while raids. This also complicates the matters.

As for shortage of weapons this explains a lot:

I remember watching these British SAS guys on TV just before they started their operations back then - about 2001 ??.

I know the Zimbabwean army when BMATT used to train them, they had the same "Landrover gunships" - I think that was the term they used.

Yes that explains a lot; I bet that this was idea of same smartass that decided do disband old Iraqi army after invasion.
As for quality from what I have heard that new Iraqi army is quite well trained, but they are quite unveiling to serve outside their region.

Pngwerume SAS always had soft spot on armed jeeps. They have long experience in there usage; as a matter of fact right after SAS was founded they used heavy armed jeep Willis for attacks at Africa corp. Il try to found some WW II SAS jeep pictures, it is quite amazing how much firepower they packed…

Ps. Here are two SAS WWII jeep pictures

Technicals are great asset in counter insurgency operations, and they were used quite often by all sides. During Libyan fiasco in Chad Libyans suffered heavy loses to technicals (I remember seeing picture of Toyota armed whit 20mm oberlikon AAgun and one Toyota armed whit small caliber MLRS from that war; also Iraqi Toyota armed whit ATGM from 2003).

For those interested in a description of the event: :p

In 1982, when Libya invaded Chad, armored units of Muammar Qaddafi's elite Pan-African Legion were resoundingly defeated by the army of Chad. Scores of T-62 tanks were destroyed by militiamen who had made technicals from Toyota pickup trucks, (most of them still in their civilian paint). The technicals were essentially makeshift tank destroyers, as the militiamen had welded tripod mounts for assorted recoilless rifles into the beds of the trucks. The Libyans retreated in disarray, leaving scores of wrecked and burning T-62 tanks behind. Granted, this is a likely scenario even for any modern MBT confronted by a force fielding well-armed technicals in a similar situation, or when the engaged force is unable to deal with an unexpected form of asymmetrical warfare.

As for why the Iraqi security forces are rolling around in technicals, might have something to do with the missing billion-dollars:

What has happened to Iraq's missing $1bn?
By Patrick Cockburn in Baghdad
Published: 19 September 2005

One billion dollars has been plundered from Iraq's defence ministry in one of the largest thefts in history, The Independent can reveal, leaving the country's army to fight a savage insurgency with museum-piece weapons.

The money, intended to train and equip an Iraqi army capable of bringing security to a country shattered by the US-led invasion and prolonged rebellion, was instead siphoned abroad in cash and has disappeared.

Here's some great pics of technicals currently in use in Mogadishu:

Thanks adeptitus. Interesting photos from Somalia on that site.

I think once you have the right weapons on a technical, it is a cheap effective way to fight against armour. It is light and fast and I am cure a lot less training needed. Especially if you know your enermy’s tanks are going to be able penetrate/defeat the armour on any tank you can lay your hands on. Provided your terrain can be crossed by a technical, you might as well get 10 technical (or more) for the price of one tank.

Going back to Zimbabwe, allegedly learning from the British experience in the Falklands (I not sure exactly what) but Zimbabwe invested in wheeled amoured cars as opposed to tanks.

Welp, these would definately qualify as Technicals.

It's not such an uncommon practice, really. One can usualy modify a civilian truck to carry weapons if one knows their stuff. I heard on this site that some SUV's are being armed with remote-control Defense Turrets, and the use of Technicals in Somalia and Iraq is well documented. They have been used for decades in other countries and are actualy pretty successful if used correctly.

This bad boy is using a ZPU-2 Anti-Air gun. I dont even want to know what that did to the suspension.

Usualy, the trucks are straight civilian, though some are modified with armor in a modification shop. Alot of times though, these guys will scrounge up anything they can find to plaster around the engine compartment. The Iraqi Police force and the U.S Forces there will use Kevlar Blankets, Sandbags, Sheet Metal, old Ballistic Glass and even Plywood. This is called 'Hillbilly Armor' or 'Farmer Armor' in the U.S Army, and 'Haji' by Iraqi's. The Stryker's 'Slat' armor was actualy bassed on the principle of an Anti-RPG system that was originaly used by WW2 Germany and Russia, and was largely an improvised system, so I have heard.

Hope that helps, ahho.

Off subject, sometimes me and some of my friends like to refer to them as 'Ghetto Tanks', though this obviously is not offical.

ah yes this is true, how can i forget the WW2 tactics that both side employs :). Just wondering, how heavy is that black turret??
