not even close to the F-18 ;)

Iran has traded away many things for the position she get herself into today, which is the nuke program
I think Iran make a mistake in insisting Nuke program. They shall abandon it. This will clear the way of sanction for them to buy Russia S-300 or china HQ-9. What I mean is they can upgrade large pool of conventional weapon . Or probably TOT the FC-1 /L-15 / JH-7A and build up a large AF since it has plenty of oil.

When it's conventional weapon area is strong. Then it pursue the nuclear program... Lol.

one thing we can probably all agree is Iran's advancing pretty well on missiles technology, again as stated before because it is a relatively a simpler field compared to shipbuilding or aerospace

they even have space programs, and launched a few micro satellites, that is a pretty good achievement

but one really has to be cautious and skeptical about Iran military development news, a grain of salt phrase is simply not cutting it on Iran's case :)

regarding stealth fighters, or fighter development in general, the Sofreh Mahih is supposedly their avant garde program

unfortunately they seem to go full steam on the nuclear development, regardless of the nature of the program

they have been trying to develop some home made Buk variant and assortment of SAMs like the Hawk and SM
FC-1 can be a good fit for IRIAF, low cost low maintenance
but i think Iran is not pushing hard trying to develop its AF, they are focusing on missile forces

you know when you are staring face to face with the US you have little chance of winning air battles

The key is not to beat USAF. The key is to inflict enough air losses to make US think twice about hammering you.

Another thing I admire for what is Iran trying to do is that they are as far as I know the 1st Middle East oil producing nation trying to do this.

Almost all other oil producer such as Saudi, Iraq, Kuwait etc... are really spending the money on consumer goods or building shopping malls or money directly goes to the loyal family, at best the UAE government is building a financial center. But none of them have many any real effort in building up technology and manufacturing using their oil money.

Iran as far as I can tell is the only one doing this, I think this has to do with how they see themselves as a civilization, they had one of the world's biggest civilization early on, and even after they been conquered so many times, they still rise up repeatedly, and interestingly throughout their history, they were always in conflict with states that were much more powerful than were. I feel they do have this drive from this sense of destiny they feels, which is very similar to what drives China.

In the long run, I would not underestimate Iran, but for the foreseeable future, they are very screwed.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1747 was a United Nations Security Council resolution that tightened the sanctions imposed on Iran in connection with the Iranian nuclear program. It was adopted unanimously by the United Nations Security Council on 24 March 2007.
...............
In the Resolution 1747, the Council decided to tighten the sanctions imposed on Iran in connection with that nation's nuclear program. It also resolved to impose a ban on arms sales and to step up the freeze on assets already in place.

Iran's "stealth fighter" the HESA Shafaq (Before the Dawn) it's first prototype here on display. Below here is a video on the plane and also pictures of its cockpit. Now if only we have this kind of access to the Chengdu J-20 and the Shenyang J-31.
