I do wonder what engine it exactly uses? Indigenous or foreign design? It seems a turboprop to me.

There wS a fun story on how the F-14 got selected. Since the F-14 has a lower thrust to weight than the F-15, prior to the demo to the Shah of Iran the Tomcat pilots left the engines running on the runway to deplete the fuel load. As a result they were able to complete many spectacular maneuvers that put even the Eagle to shame. They completed the demo with very little fuel to spare, but won Grumman the contract.
