Simple, oversight. Big equipment like vests, helmets, optics, weapons are great PR. You have to get budgets approved with senior officers and politicians who frankly maybe detached and have little knowledge of the military respectively.

Would have made sense if not for the fact they practice all the time, not to mention the multiple wars PLA has been in.

I’m sure *someone* found out that veterans started to have poor hearing (most likely sometime during the Chinese civil war!) and decided to do something about it?!

Even the shooting ranges in China force you to have earplugs, it makes zero sense that the army would let you do anything loud without.

@TerraN_EmpirE

last bit was just a joke. Most likely the cost is from drones/loitering munitions or something? That seems like an easy way to inflate kit prices.

I imagine they’re made based on prior experience to specifically prevent damage from wartime sounds

@Biscuits, the last war the PLA fought was 30 years ago.

The last war Germany fought in was 80 years ago. What are you trying to say?

And I bet bombing the viets in 79 was loud as hell too. It’s not like the modern PLA would be significantly louder so as to render tom? Maybe less so even due to precision strike.

Armies practice.

And China has done police actions and counterterrorism operations almost constantly

Just quit arguing, you can see for yourself that they wear protection when using loud equipment.

Your assumption that they’re somehow immune to common sense or immune to loud noises are both completely unfounded in reality. Besides how would the army even explain to families? You’re not making sense.

China will need to at least observe modern military conflicts if it seeks to maintain the relevancy of its military apparatus. They also need to conduct wargames with other countries.

they wear it under the helmet

why would they spend tens of thousands $ on frontline soldier equipment and somehow miss ear plugs?

judging by the cost of the soldier kits on those sent to fight in Xinjiang, it’s probably not even normal plugs but overdesigned types that can play music and maybe have Alexa built in
Well, if they do wear camouflage ear plugs, good on them and the PLA.

Like Syria? Or Xinjiang?

China conducts war games and training with other nations all the time, in addition to it’s own.

No two truly modern militaries have ever fought after the Korean War. Everyone is equally relevant (or not so) on that front.

Despite what people think Operation Desert Storm was two modern armies at war.
The Iraqi army has been belittled since then especially by proRusso fanboi who wish to try and excuse the failure of Modern Russian armored designs vs there western counterparts, but in the late 1980s Saddam spent a considerable some of the Iraqi GDP buying the best the Soviets and export market had to offer the owner of the largest army in the Arab world.
"But Monkey model T72s."
Bull those tanks were state of the art Warsaw pact tanks the Iraqis homemade versions never saw production beyond a handful of prototypes.
What they faced was an Army tailor made to destroy it. The elites of the Iraqi Republican Guard employed the best the Russians had to offer with text book Soviet doctrines. It was a modern force and it broke.

The Post fall Soviet brake up conflicts were also then "Modern" armies in conflict. As former Soviet republics equipped with the same weapons turned on each other. Resulting in stailmates and bloody asymmetric conflicts as the armor corps ground against armored corps and blood feuds boiled to the top.

And finally the Korean war was not two modern armies facing off properly it was a modern army facing off against an underprepared force that kept "bugging out" until that modern army over extended its self breaking down into an unprepared army and a modern well prepared army emerged on the other side That pushed them back and overextended its self until it faced another army and the whole thing ground to a halt.

The question is not that of monkey models or not. That is irrelevant when their T72s were equipped with training rounds for god’s sake!

The Iraq military was in horrendous shape, with no air cover, extremely poor equipment standards and no technology of it’s own.

You and I have very different definitions of a modern force. I believe being able to “shoot back” should at least be a requirement...

By that standard, China’s feat vs Vietnam was more impressive as the Viet army actually has good track record, good equipment standards and cutting edge Soviet equipment derived from a true alliance with them, rather than the estranged arrangement that forced Poland to middleman arms sales to Saddam.

But it would still be plain stupid to compare the Vietnamese army to the US army lol

The Korean War was very much two modern forces facing each other, both sides just applied poor tactics at several points of the conflict.

Nevertheless, warfare has drastically changed since then, and lessons learned there would largely not matter today.
