The Kolkata class DDGs are India's large, Aegis-like destroyers. They displace 6,8-- tons and have advanced AESA radars, VLS Systems, and land attack capabilities. . They were all launched between 2006 and 2010. They sat waiting for their weapons and propulsion systems to be delivered and only recently was the first vessel outfitted enough for sea trials which she underwent this summer.

During those trials machinery issues were noted in her gearing system and she is now back at the builder's for addressing those issues. As a result, her official handover to the Indian Navy, instead of being in the late summer, slipped to the spring of 2014. But finally progress on the vessels have been made. Here she is, docked with other Indian vessels either just before or after trials.

@ Jeff, do you have a link for the kolkata going on sea trials?

Anyway, the kolkata class are a decent type of warship. They have good surface attack capability with Brahmos, even if supersonic cruise missiles aren't what they're hyped to be. They also have a potent SAM complement, but the Barak -1 and Barak -8 are both relatively short ranged. One is only 10km ranged, the other 70km. The latest news says that Barak -8 still has yet to enter service with the IN.

But they get a few things right. The twin helicopter hangar is a definite bonus. The highly placed israeli AESA is also a plus for defense against sea skimmers.

It's a shame they're so delayed and they're only building three of them, but I think they should focus on developing a more potent SAM first.

Clearly, no jet deflector and the take off position is just too near to the island.

Yeah, that's going to be a big problem for deck operations. I suspect they may be forced to use mainly the rearward launch position until the deck is mostly cleared of other aircraft before they can use the forward launch position.

I wonder how long/hard it would be to retrofit jet deflectors because it seems like a pretty major oversight and will give them a lot of needless headaches if they want to operate her at anything close to max potential capacity.

I have stated here many times that the Vikramaditya is deeply flawed and will be nowhere near as effective as her size suggest.

The Indians are very well aware of her issues.

But the real point is, that she will be much, much more effective than what they currently have in the Viraat.

Guys, discussion of the Thai carrier is Off Topic on this thread. If you do not see your post here, it is on the ASEAN thread, where this topic belongs.

Ok, back on topic.

Bit of an oddity. There was a cultural event linked to the Vikramaditya handover. A sort of a cabaret show with both Russian and Indian performers. I wonder if we missed out on something similare with the commissioning of the Liaoning.
