On top of that, by the time the first of these 114 additional airframes is delivered — assuming the proposed deal is consummated — the Dassault Rafale will be a 45+ year old design.

This means IAF Rafales will serve well into the 2050s or more likely the 2060s, at which point the Rafale will be an ~80 year old design.

Not sure why the Indians aren't going with a Su-57 derivative — unless these negotiations with the French are merely intended to secure Russian concessions — but guessing it's a combination of "drinking too much of their own Kool-Aid," and Indian officials prioritizing kickbacks over national defense.

All jokes aside, it's a pretty sad situation.

As far as we know, first proposal was made a few months ago, and actual Su-57 two-seater didn't even fly yet.
It's story in its early stages.

I wouldn't be surprised if IAF halted acquisitions after 30-40 units.

Is there any mention of transfer of engine technology? I think this is a possibility.

Years ago when they were first interested in Rafs they originally wanted 100+ but that 1st deal was full of Modi and his billionaire friends corruption/money scheme so they only settled for the 36, they have been eyeing for 100+ for years, with their squadrons now down to 29 they need something ever more.

There is no ToT news but there is some old news/potential deal with saffran to make engine for india's 5th gen.

Tbh, if you check how this killkroozer KSP abomination is arranged internally , it's pure wonder it works so well.
(Also, it appears 1 satellite managed to survive and do it's job...even better than intended! There was a Spanish reentry capsule KID, and it worked)

India and France has a seperate engine deal which is supposed to deliver a brand new 5th gen engine to AMCA by 2035. The engine on Rafale is very old by now (it began development in the 1970s) and France has nothing better.

So basically India is betting the farm on collaborating with a country which has no proven track record of anything remotely 5th gen and to produce it in record time (9 years). Draw your own conclusions.

36 billion USD for 114x 4.5th-gen jets is basically... 315.8 million USD per jet.

I doubt that the J-36 - Which is much larger, heavier and leagues ahead in terms of sophistication - Is even that expensive. Or being about in the same price tag category in the worst-case scenario. Holy sh1t.

Not gonna happen. The Jai Hinds would rather detonate their own nukes across all Indian cities before going ahead with this.
