As a reminder, the IAF's current squadron strength is 31 and will soon fall to 29. Pakistan is at 25. Who is to blame for this state of affairs? If you ask IAF brass, they point to HAL. Regardless, the IAF will now need to buy in a panic.

It is a good analysis. But it is also India´s problem that they bet 100% on the US. Now the US is recalibrating its relations with Pakistan. Rumor has it that one reason why the US was displeased with Hasina´s government was her relatively neutral China stance. It is no secret that she was seen as India´s asset in the region.

In many ways, I think the 2020 border clash between China and India was a very smart move geopolitically. I am not sure if China made it on purpose, but they essentially pushed India into the arms of the US, blindly, and in so doing made the Indians forget all the moves that the US did in their neighbourhood.

Essentially, the Indians appeared to be pursuing an "European" strategy in terms of trying to offload their defence heavy lifting to the US. It no longer works for Europe, as so Europe has to spend more. And in many ways we are seeing the same with India, as they are panic-buying all kinds of military equipment lately as they realised that the US isn´t as dependable as they had imagined. A hard lesson: you can only be sovereign if you make your own mil-tech stuff. Otherwise you will be at someone else´s mercy.
