how will that have gone? us origin f18 serving on russian origin carrier?

Article from 2008 and blatantly untrue - do to lower T/W and higher stall speed then Mig-29K, Super Hornet could take off from INS Vikramaditya only with minimal payload and fuel .

India seals Rafale jet deal with French firm

In the last days of its tenure, the UPA-II government has reached the crucial “work share agreement” with French firm Dassault for supply of 126 Rafale fighter jets to India. While a deal is expected to be signed only later this year, it is learnt that the two sides have agreed on the pact to operationalise the multi-billion dollar pact.

This is being seen as a “major development”, since the two sides have agreed on one of the major pacts to implement the deal after almost two years of zeroing in on the French defence major. The two sides are also working on an agreement for a sovereign guarantee that Dassault will supply, service and maintain the Rafales over the next 40 years.

Overruling concerns raised by Dassault on Hindustan Aeronotics Limited as a partner, it has been decided that HAL will carry out 70 per cent of the work on the 108 aircrafts made in India. The remaining 30 per cent will be done by Dassault. The first batch of 18 MMRCA planes will be fully manufactured in France and will be brought to India in “fly-away” condition.

Indian Navy To Open Search for Carrier Air Defense System
NEW DELHI — The Indian Navy has declined, for now, a Russian offer to mount the Kashtan air defense system on India’s INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier, and instead will seek a system through open competition, a Defence Ministry source said.

Originally, the former Admiral Gorshkov was to be mounted with an Indo-Israeli air defense system, the long-range surface-to-air missile system, which has been under development by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation since 2007. But technical problems created uncertainty about whether the system would ever be completed, the MoD source said.

During a recent meeting here of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation, Russia offered to mount the Kashtan close-in weapon system to meet the Russian-built carrier’s air defense needs. While the system has not been rejected outright, the Navy says it wants to explore the market for alternate systems.

The Vikramaditya, which went through a refit at Russia’s Sevmash shipyard, sailed to India last month without an air defense system on board. The MoD source said the Navy has made a request to begin the process of acquiring a system.

The Israelis have approached the MoD and made a presentation of the Barak air defense system; the French also have expressed interest in participating in the competition if held, the MoD source said.

An Indian Navy official said the service has faced problems in the timely supply of spares from Russia for several of “their assets,” including submarines, and the lengthy delay in acquiring the carrier drove the decision to decline the Russian offer for Kashtan.

“Better options should be explored for getting weapons for the Russian-built carrier,” the official said.

When asked if the Vikramaditya is vulnerable to enemy attack because it lacks an air defense system, the Navy official said the carrier will function in a group where other frigates and destroyers will provide adequate air defense.

A diplomat with the Russian Embassy here said the offer to mount the Kashtan system on the ship has always been open to the Indian Navy, but it never showed interest in receiving the system.

“The Indian Navy has yet to decide the weapon systems it wants to mount on the Russian carrier, nearly a decade after the deal was inked in 2004,” said Mahindra Singh, a retired Indian Army major general and defense analyst

The Vikramaditya will be fitted with 20mm and 30mm guns along with the air defense system, another Navy official said.

The Navy has one operating 50-year-old aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, whose life has been extended to 2017, when the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier joins the service.

Kashtan is an extremely good dual system.

However, if the Indians cannot get parts, support, etc. it makes it difficult to maintain.

If they cut a deal, they should get enough missiles and spare parts for the forseeable future as a part of the deal...delivered.

The two later Chinese Sovremenny DDGs, DDG-138 and DDG-139 Nigbo, both have two Kashtan CIWS systems on them.

Mangalore: Russian Built Indian Aircraft carrier INS Vikramadatiya has been at sea most of the time since it arrived in India. At present 5 Indian Navy pilots have landed on the deck of an aircraft carrier. As per Sevmash, the shipyard responsible for delivery of the aircraft carrier to India, all hardware is working properly. Russian made chiller MTHI 2000, which provides air cooling to the ship is performing satisfactorily in the hot climate and is able to to maintain a comfortable temperature in the carrier.
Sevmash representatives were among the Russian delegation which arrived in Goa for the 23rd meeting of the Sub-Group on shipbuilding – Russian-Indian intergovernmental Commission on military-technical cooperation, which was held in early March.

During the meet, the ships commander Commodore Berry noted that, in his opinion, no ship building plant in the world could handle the task that the Indian side had set for Sevmash. The meeting also saw the signing of a protocol for additional agreement on post-warranty service of the carrier. The agreement expected to be signed in May.
By the end of March, a partial warranty group will head back to Severodvinsk, and will be replaced by other set of warranty group. The Navy is readying the 45,000-tonne warship for the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who is scheduled to spend a day sailing before he retires.

PLAN has also been experiencing the same issue with getting parts for weapon systems on Sov DDGs and Kilos. I think they've managed to get local suppliers a lot of these on their own, but I would not be surprised if Kashtan disappear from Sov DDGs when PLAN does its upgrade of Sov.

That is the most important line. Unlike the Liaoning that has been at port about 75% of the time since her commissioning. Lets hope that after an air wing is on board that she will go to sea more often.

I have a stupid question that has been bothering me for a long while. So I have learned from my good fellow SDF members that India has been operating their own CVs for several decades. However, this is the first time their own pilots have landed on a CV. So what kind of planes had they been landing on their own CVs before? If none, then what was the purpose of their CVs if they had no planes to land?

Sea Harriers & helicopters. Though if I remember correctly the Indian Navy lost more than 1/2 of their original 30 Sea Harriers to crashes through out the years.
