While both France and the US have offered their fighters, the key issue is that the western jets are designed to operate from a flat deck with the assistance of a catapult. The Indian ships do not have the catapult and rely on a ski jump for take-off. To overcome this, Boeing says that it will prove that the Super Hornet can operate from a ski jump by conducting physical tests.

Not sure how true this claim is but India is likely to be disappointed, again.

All the medium weight fifth generation (and 5th Gen adjacent) fighters, from the J-31 to the KFX, TFX, and AMCA, all do resemble a twin engine F-35.

I think it has to do with the optimal stealth shape for a supersonic fighter (serpentine intakes generally standardize the fuselage to a large degree, and the control surface layouts are pretty F-35/F22 style if you want to maximize stealth but don't want canards).

NASAMS AIM120D seems like it's a purchase to balance out the S-400 purchase. This way neither Russia or US can say India is favouring one over the other. At least it seems that way to me. S-300, S-400, Spyder, Akash, and NASAMS.

Dunno about that, looking at the shopping list of India it's overwhelmingly Russian. It looks to me like a attempt to cover the medium to long range gap of India's air defence.

India would maintain relations with Russians irrespective of our strategic shift towards US. US is our biggest trading partners in both goods + services. India need US investment ,critical technology for its development in long run.
