Same issues as M53, though admittedly less. R-93 is significantly larger(length and diameter) and requires more airflow.
Tejas is a very small plane, you can't easily change this much.
There's of course a way, they can order JF-17...
Should have done so from the start of the program in the 1990s. At least the engine wouldn't have been an additional headache.

What people get from perception of their militaries? I'm sorry, but it's really bragging rights. But humans are social animals. Bragging rights affect people's self esteem way more than we dare to admit.
I think it’s stupid since your opinion on how good/bad the military is has no bearing on actual performance. Then again, we see the same with sports teams…
I think most Indian people (largely due to BJP Jai Hind stuff over the last decade) had the impression that a Pakistan India conflict would be one-sided in India's favor (At least in their minds, the comparison was India = Israel and Pakistan = Palestine.). That's why it's hard for them to come to terms with the fact that it is not the case plus IZZAT is another issue altogether. They would like to treat Pakistan the way Gaza has been treated and they struggle to accept that they are unable to do so. They want to be like fatherland (Israel). Plus they tend to hype weapons so much that actual performance does not live up to the reality. IAF Chief is on record stating that SU30 can detect J20 and Rafale is enough to handle J20/J35 or other 5th gen fighters due to spectra lol.

If we return to this image, we can see how early F404 was embedded in the LCA project. It is a commonplace assertion that you design the aircraft around the powerplant. This they did, and in doing set a benchmark for Kaveri that was far higher than could be met. Divorcing Kaveri from LCA marks the end of significant development work on the engine. Who is funding an engine with no application? EJ200 was assessed as suitable for LCA Mk. 2. But that was fifteen years and innumerable design revisions ago. Progress is so glacial that it makes the prospect of engine substitution, requiring a great deal of work but otherwise basically plausible, about as attractive as the Bubonic Plague.
A lot of things start to make sense when one considers ADA, HAL and IAF not so much as collaborative partners engaged in a joint enterprise to delivery a necessary capability for the nation, but as warring tribes united by little more than the contempt they have for one another. ADA and HAL have their toxic co-dependent relationship, and IAF is happy to humour them both so long as it does not interfere with the actually essential task of importing foreign combat aircraft. It is like the old Soviet joke: "We pretend to work and the bosses pretend to pay us." Or in this case, ADA pretends to design the aircraft, HAL pretends to manufacture it and the IAF pretends to be interested in inducting it.
I mean, you still have people doing B-21 and Three Gorge Dams jokes despite the abismal performance of the US against Iran and Yemen.
I suspect that these people, like a lot of hardcore racists, literally have nothing else going for them IRL. This is why they need to bandwagon with something as pathetic as the Mango Regime to get a tiny morsel of win.
