I'm participating in Model UN

I did a world diplomacy simulation in my international studies class. My team was Iran. America ended up declaring war on us and we whooped them with the best military plan the people running it had ever seen (their words not mine), got them to drop sanctions on us, leave Iraq and apologize for interfering in Iranian affairs. So I guess coming to SDF has paid off :D.

Anyway good luck and always drive a hard bargain, it will pay off!

ROFL, that sounds hilarious. How did you guys carry out the war plans? Were there war games? :)

Here are my suggestions for you as a representative of China:

1. China is undergoing peaceful development. Unlike some countries, China does not have any combat troops in someone else's country.

2. If they bring up China's defense budget, always point out that the world leader spends ten times more than China. Furthermore, China is surrounded by powerful countries and need to defend against all of those countries.

3. If they discuss carbon emissions, you should inform them that China's carbon emissions per capita is 1/4 of an American. Also, Western countries have been dumping CO2 into the atmosphere for two centuries. They are primarily responsible for global warming, not China.

4. If they bring up Iran, say "China needs oil." Same thing with Myanmar or Sudan.

5. Whenever they criticize China, find a good argument and finish with: It's a win-win for both sides. For example, China is importing a lot of natural resources. You say: "China's imports of natural resources are ultimately converted into manufactured goods that are consumed by Westerners. Therefore, Westerners are the beneficiary of the natural resource imports by China from developing countries. This is a win-win for natural resource exporters and Western consumers."

6. If they want China to assume more responsibilities, inform them that China's per-capita GDP is 1/10th of an American and it is beyond China's capabilities.

7. On North Korea, inform them that China cannot allow the North Koreans to implode. Otherwise, millions of North Korean refugees will overwhelm Northeastern China.

8. On U.S.-China relations, ignore the negatives and focus on the positives. Stress the differences in culture for different policy approaches and reiterate that "China is a good partner of the U.S." Differences exist, but the China-U.S. commonalities are more important and China works to help solve world problems.

9. On expansion of the UNSC, China is in favor of more equitable representation. Whatever group that they present, just say that China will study the proposal and consult with the U.N. General Assembly. It will take forever to obtain an U.N. General Assembly consensus.

10. On the potential of China threatening her neighbors, claim that U.S. military technology is far superior and China is only trying to defend herself against a militarily-superior foe. Chinese are peace-loving Pandas and threaten no one. China's thermonuclear weapons are irrelevant because China has a "no first-use" policy. China's nuclear arsenal is strictly defensive.

There it is. My top ten platforms for your Model UN. One more thing, if they claim that China is manipulating her currency, the fact is that China's currency has appreciated by 25% in the last five years from 8.26 to 6.63 yuan per U.S. dollar.

If anyone asks when China will land on the moon, tell them 2025.

Good luck.

Martin: LOVE the little rant you just gave!

airsuperiority: gl hf! (if you don't play starcraft, good luck and have fun!)

I partook in a MUN back in high school (not same level as college MUNs, obviuosly) between all the high schools in my city. We went as St. Lucia since they wanted someone more experienced for China. I represented St. Lucia in the GA (really, who's heard of the place?) and basically listend to the big guys boss people around and sign on to their proposals. Hope you fare better as China!

I think that's pretty much how it works in the real UN too.

thanks solar, obcession,(yup i play sc), martian!!

Actually just in case you guys may be wondering, these are the information:

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

This year's committees and topics are shown below. You can find more detailed descriptions of each topic on the respective committee page. Please also refer to Country Assignments section to see how we are going to distribute and assign countries this year.

By December you will also be able to find topic guidebooks for each topic.

Security Council (SC)
1. The Arab-Israeli Conflict
2. Ethics in contemporary warfare

General Assembly (GA)
1. Colonial Debts And Debt Relief for Impoverished Nations
2. Self-determination in Sudan

World Health Organization (WHO)
1. The NDM-1 Superbug
2. Combating HIV/AIDS

World Trade Organization (WTO)
1. Multinational Corporation Regulations
2. Free Trade and Protectionism in the Context of the Recession

Historical Committee (GA: May 1st, 1947)
1. Future of Palestine
2. Independence of British India

I'm currently building a team of 5 so I can get PRC sooner and easier. They select by giving the G5 to the most experienced people, therefore I wanna get my choice sooner before others join.

The rule was that for each country, there will be 5 members, each representing one of the committee. Resolutions were also written up during over the course of the conference.
For me, I've recruited 2 friends into the cause already. I'm picking UNSC, but I'll have to do additional research into topic 1 and 2. My 2nd friend is a 4th year business student who's just taken commercial law, SO he's choosing WTO. My third friend is Geo major, but knows a great deal about wars, weaponry, and pays attention to world politics. He's taking GA. With that, it leaves WHO and the historical committee in question. With that said, now I'm recruiting people for it lol. I asked additional details and turns out people from another schools can join, and when he said that, Vesicles came into my mind because I know he's majoring in medicine, and it'd be an excellent opportunity. But otherwise, now I need to look for a history major and a medical student for the cause.

If you people are interested in knowing what my school's MUN is about, you can visit that link. It's the official page.

Also, from that list of topics, what did you guys come up with that might be potentially something I should expect or prepare for ? Once again, thanks for the encouragement and advice!!
