How about broods of killer super-cockroaches then?:

Cosmic Cockroaches Develop Faster
cockroach-bg.jpg

'Ordinary' cockroaches are already known for their extraordinary resilience. Some species can last almost an hour without oxygen or a month without food, and are able to withstand high doses of radiation.

Voronezh, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jan 18, 2008
Cockroaches conceived in space onboard the Russian Foton-M bio satellite have developed faster and become hardier than 'terrestrial' ones, a research supervisor said on Thursday. The research team has been monitoring the cockroaches since they were born in October. The scientists established that their limbs and bodies grew faster.
"What is more, we have found out that the creatures... run faster than ordinary cockroaches, and are much more energetic and resilient," Dmitry Atyakshin said.

To be honest, if I were to develop a wartime mech, I would prefer to pursue the shape of a cockroach versus that of a humanoid.

Their design is extremely efficient. They should have a low surface to mass ratio, and their physical design makes it good for sloped and streamlined armor that can cover the entire body.

not to mention that it's much easier to balance with 6 legs, and having 6 legs gives you more redundancy.

First thing first.

1. You people got to watch CLOVERFIELD. This is really one of the best SF movies I have watched for a long time, if not all time.
.........

Yup, watched it. Very good, I'd give it A-. Think they've overdone the moving camera thing though.

, by John von Radowitz,
February 18, 2008 Monday 2:39 AM BST, The Press Association @LexisNexis.com:

Planets as large or bigger than the Earth are waiting to be discovered at the edge of the Solar System, scientists believe.

Some of them may contain warm oceans in their interiors, opening up the possibility of hidden havens for life trillions of miles from the Sun.

The objects are thought to exist in the Oort Cloud, a vast region swarming with comets that marks the outer boundary of the Solar System.

The Oort Cloud extends to almost a quarter of the distance between the Sun and its nearest neighbouring star, Proxima Centauri.

It is believed to contain as many as a trillion comets, and perhaps 1,000 small planetary bodies. But computer models and astronomical evidence suggest there may be much bigger objects lurking in the Oort Cloud, some the size of the Earth and Mars, or larger.

Because so little sunlight penetrates the region they inhabit, they would be invisible to ordinary telescopes. Only highly sensitive instruments capable of detecting the faintest infrared signals would stand a chance of finding them.

More at the link.

According to this article, an object three to fives times the mass of Earth must have struck Neptune to knock it over on its axis, and that "several dozen" such objects should be located in the Oort Cloud. Moreover, some of them may have warm liquid seas underneath ice surfaces, whilst others would be gas giants.

Given that aliens will have technological superiority, I belief that we should try to fight in "eqaulising terrain" like Urban enviroments or Jungles. Also, we would have to get into alliances with other Alien nations (none of them will propably like the invading race to get stronger) in order to minimize our technological problems.
Also, I would expect terran air forces to be shot out of the air and navies to be sunk, because the technological avatadnge shows the most in these ways of warfare (assuming our invaders are a land born species, well, if they are aquatic or aerial, our navies and air fleets will be shot even more).

Lets have a look at how colonies were operated:

1. The Cortez approach.
The Spaniards did not land with a shiny army of Knights in Mesoamerica, it was a veryl small and tiny force. No, what did the trick were smallpox and cleverly utilizing the fact the the Aztecs were hated.
Assuming a small number of Aliens posing as the Mahdi and leading a new Jihad? Sounds certainly viable, Cortez was aided by people beliefing him to be a god too.

2. All your trade are belong to us!
The Dutch East Indies:
If the Alien nation lacks the manpower to occupy earth (which is something they propably will, if their reporductive rates are anywhere close to humans that is), they could simply open our markets, monopolise interstellar trade with their tech advantadge and get filthy rich in the process. Assuming that they dont want workforce (building a robot would be much cheaper than capturing a human and flying it through space I believe), or any juicy parts of human bodies (which could happen, maybe they have a "must sacrifice sentient species" cult), we may be fairly well off.

3: This is the promised land!
The English approach:
The by far worst thing that could happen would be Aliens with an overpopulation problem. They would simply take the most hosptiable regions from us, and provided we dont manage to join up with other alien factions, they are not going to leave.

4: This land will NOT be English,
The French approach:
The French wanted military bases and to prevent the lands from falling into the hands of competitors. This propably would not be half bad, and open some new areas of interest for things like the Foreign Legion.

5: Exploit Zeh Unhumans!
the most cruel colonial power was Belgium. In fact, their exploits in Kongo were so morally retarded that even Germany (which was abit above average in terms of beeing mean) complained about that. Coincidently, Belgiums advantadge did not last long.

I had a thought of writing this mainly for fun and speculation ever since I saw a replay of Independence Day and later the latest War of the Worlds redo with Tom Cruise. Other sparks on of inspiration came from Londo Molari's video of JF-17s fighting UFOs and finally about the Japanese news article suggestion that their armed forces should consider alien threats. And to think about it, the concept that we are alone in the Universe gets less and less with every exoplanet---well over 200 so far---that is discovered with the Hubble telescope. And that's just the stellar neighborhood.

To begin with, if we are seriously invaded by aliens...

1. Please don't assume we can shoot the motherships down with AMRAAMs.

There is this part in the movie Independence Day, where a formation of F-18s fired their AMRAAMs directly at the alien mothership. The effect is like shooting toothpicks to an elephant.

What are they thinking? If you seriously get invaded by aliens and they have huge motherships, you need something even bigger. I would prefer a Harpoon or an antiship missile whose seeker is reprogrammed to consider a large moving detection in the air a valid target as much as a large moving detection in the surface of the water. Antiship missiles are radar guided so they can pick up a large mothership like they would with a battleship. They are semi armor piercing and got a big warhead.

Even better than a Harpoon or Exocet would be a big old Russian Sunburn, Onxy or Granit. I would fire them off the ships when I can, or from large fighters, bombers or converted airliners.

Of course you can expect these missiles to be shot down by whatever defenses a mothership can have, but lets just hope some will get through. The faster the missile, the better the potential chances.

2. No need of heroics of flying a plane into the mothership's exhaust port.

And no need of the Force either. If you want to send something down or up into an alien mothership's exhaust port, a TV guided missile like a Maverick or a UCAV can do the trick. Assuming motherships have some kind of port.

3. Mother Nature's bacteria taking care of the aliens? Much like the ending of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds.

But seriously, if we are invaded, we actually stand as much of an equal chance of being infected and dying by whatever pathogens and contagions the aliens bring with them. Disease control should be part of any front line against an alien threat.

4. Our satellite networks...

...will be the first things that are going to be destroyed and shut down by an incoming alien invasion. We will not have GPS, we will not have satellite communications, we will simply not have anything what we depend on satellites for. We will have to fight without them.

5. Don't think about Star Trek or Star Wars, phasers, death rays and light sabers. Alien weapons should be a lot more direct and physical. Beams of concentrated energy like lasers don't store, transport or project energy in densities you can with physical projectiles.

If alien motherships are going to invade us, they're not going to hover over our cities and shooting everything in sight with direct energy ray weapons. They would be in low Earth orbit, dumping huge rocks at us. At least that is how I would do it. I would take an asteroid, carve it up to pieces, and start dumping them like large meteors, towards our airbases and cities. The effects can be catastrophic, if an event like something that happened in Tunguska in the beginning of the century would happen in a major populated city like New York.

We would have Tunguska events over all our major cities while rocks are blowing moon sized craters at our military bases.

6. Our Airforces...

...are not going to put up much of a fight initially as our bases are being blown by falling meteors. We will be forced to gather our surviving planes into heavily dispersed make shift bases, and pray we have as many underground bases as possible. It is preferable we have aircraft that can vertically launch or take off from short strips, like highways. We are going to lose a lot of our expensive fourth, 4.5 and fifth generation fighters. Stealth means nothing for the alien techs, our Raptors and B-2s will get detected anyway. Speed and agility maybe more useful, but dogfighting against alien drones and fighters, we will have significant negative combat ratios. It won't be like Star Wars where everyone seems to dogfight up close. We will be using our missiles a lot, and it seems its only the speed and agility of a missile that can reach out and "touch" the alien fighters.

To replace our dire losses of front line fighters, we desperately go back to our boneyards to resurrect our old fighters. The Starfighters, the Phantoms, the Tomcats. We are going to have a serious pilot shortage, so we will use a combination of remote control and autonomous automation. And once they have ran out, we will need to replace even these. We need fighter drones that we can build fast and expendable, yet they must be fast and capable of supersonic flight, carrying missiles. We may not have time to come up with new designs so in the interim we may resurrect older fighter designs.

(to be continued)

you forgot about AAA, SAMs, and UAVs, heavy naval assets
tons of strategic and old soviet weapons of heavy damage would be used, but perhaps also EMP bombs
most likely all the powers cooperate and blend their technology and forces to create multinational forces..whether US like it or not towards the end of the day..though most nations are reluctant to do so until there's no alternatives

and we'll see lots of J-6s, J-7s, outdated 50's-60's weapons used as UAV kamikazes

This reminds me...I was at school today and there was a thing asking people to join the "Human Relations Council" which is supposed to promote like...diversity and tolerance and all that PC stuff, but I just pictured a committee in the Alien UN that deals with managing the development of the primative species on Earth.

There's a screenplay in Hollywood bought by some studio about some assymetrical attack by a foreign power on the US that renders all high technology useless. So the Americans break out basically WWII level technology to fight off an invasion. Haven't heard anything since about the production so I assume it's on the shelf.
