I don't know if language is the main cause or a contributing factor.Truth be told the average Hong Kong citizen struggles with the English language as much as they do Mandarin... Most of the people I went to school with barely can chain together the words needed to form a sentence, let alone comprehend the English language itself.
In Singapore the inverse is true. We are better at English and struggle with mandarin. But we don't fondly cherished the British colonial ruled days like HK does.
A recent report of British aircraft carrier making a port call to Singapore invited overwhelming negative comments and boos on Straits Times FB though SG govt openly welcome them.
