I love these "Sanza pian" (don't knowenglish name, anyone happens to know?), I think they're dried sugared fruit or something (never looked into it).

I could eat them for 3 meals a day. Yes I'm wierd.

I know what you mean. They're red in color and dried in the form of either cards or small disks.

I'm not sure, I think they are apple peels or something in the range of that.

Not just candied, they are processed a lot and are uhm... red dry disks/plates that are sweet and have some fruity fragrance.

But its not candied fruit, because its processed to an extent that you cannot recognize the "fruit" anymore.

I don't like BBQ's'/Grill cant stand the charcoal taste. Arent most BBQs done on a hot plate. As one of my friends said, he couldn't work out why people spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy BBQ unit, as it would be much cheaper to buy an extension lead and take ones electric frypan outside.:)

Coming from Texas I would have thought you would be into a carcass of beef done on a spit or something, now thats really something.

I once tried a Hangi otherwise known as a umu in the Islands I think where food is cooked in the ground.
Special stones are heated up in a fire using wood that has a distinctive smoky taste, it is then put into a pit with the food such as lamb pork chicken , potatoes etc are placed in wire baskets, covered with damp sacking and then backfilled. Hrs later it comes out real nice.

Hundred of dollars?? All I have is a simple unit I got at Wal-mart, $30. And it serves its purpose just fine.

Now, Hangi is something that I truly want to try. I saw it a couple times on TV and it looks delicious! I think we can only get something like that in Hawai, which is a little too far for me. I think my parents have had them before and they loved it.

If you visit those fancy BBQ outlets I'm sure you will find those fancy prices, and the units use gas as in LPG.

Yes in Hawaii they are called LEW-OW or something I don't know how to spell it.
I tried one in Hawaii it was rubbish as it caters for the tourists. I have a Maori connection in the family ( the maori are actually a Hawaiin tribe they migrated to NZ hundreds of years ago) and they have hangis from time to time, thats why I can critise the commercial/ tourist stuff.

Yep, those things are pricy. One of my wife's cousins bought one of those fancy units a couple years back. He lost me 5 seconds after he started mentioning its gizillion functions. And I asked him how often he used it. He said twice a year. He would use his less-fancy $100-unit for normal grilling. When I asked him why he bought the fancy one, he said he had to have one 'cause everyone else in the neighborhood has one......:nono:

yah, i think my god-mother is allergic to watermelon as well. that sucks.

to elaborate on the point of barbeques mentioned by others before -- as good as gas grills/barbeques are, you can't beat a real open pit barbeque with real charcoal and slow cooking, that's how you get the real flavor.

check out this pit in true texan style:

My son that lives in sunny San Diego has one of those bazzilon dollar gas grills($300 bucks).. But he uses it every Sunday during the NFL season plus frequently throughout the year.
