H-6 Bomber Aircraft Discussions

I was listening to Shilao and Yankeesama discussion from last week and their discussion about H-6 is quite interesting. I get the sense that PLA really likes H-6K/J. I am a big fan of the program too. They made the point that H-6K is much better for PLAAF's need than if they had imported Tu-22M. Tu-22M carrying 4 YJ-12s probably would not be able to go supersonic (not sure if this is true). But one thing is for sure, H-6K with that much payload will have longer range Tu-22M with similar payload. PLAAF has well over 100 H-6Ks and they can all carry 4 YJ-12s. Even more surprisingly, they mentioned that there is now a replacement for YJ-12. We have not seen pictures of it due to opsec reasons. It will be really interesting for me to find out where this new missile may improve over YJ-12.

H-6 series is likely to be in service for a while.
They mentioned 4 YJ-12s in the podcast?

When I posted the screenshots of the 9 H-6 bombers a few posts up, a commentator (not from CCTV, but some other PLA one, Qu Yanbing) did mention the 9 would be able to fire 54 YJ-12s, which would mean 6 YJ-12s per bomber. Granted, I believe we haven't actually seen them mount 3 on each wing.

I thought they were talking about Tu-22 not Tu-22M?

The Tu-22 was a failed design. I doubt China would want to buy one. The Tu-22M is basically a whole new aircraft which only kept its designation because it was sold that way to the politicians to pass as a "cheap" upgrade instead being a new aircraft.

YJ-18? YJ-21? HD-1? Which one is more likely?

According to Shilao and Yankeesama, in 1958 the Soviet Union was considering offering the still-in-development Tu-22 to China, but ultimately decided against it. They argue PLA would end up with a worse platform if they got Tu-22 instead of Tu-16. So it was Tu-16 vs Tu-22, not Tu-16 vs Tu-22M.
