H-6 Bomber Aircraft Discussions

Interesting

Eventually if they decide to have a bomber division in every corner and central part of China we could be looking at over 100 bombers

Currently around 80 x H6K units produced I doubt they will continue after this batch since H-20 is rumoured for 2019

Having said that it won’t enter production for many years yet so a 5th batch of H6K might come around

Big scope for H-20 to enter in large numbers

and remember there are still a lot of older H-6x series that still around .. .. total about > 200 of them (including H-6K)

No they're not. There's 30 naval H6G around, and perhaps <30 or so H/M variants in PLAAF. Add in a dozen or more tankers and that's maybe 150 airframes altogether.

I find it more likely H6K production will go on for years more. Replacing ALL of the older planes in both PLAAF and PLANAF. So at least another 5 years of production. At that point the H20 bomber may be ready for initial production, IF first flight of the prototype happens this year or the next. Otherwise, there will be a gap in XAC production, as it doesn't make sense to convert production line to something else for just a year or two. Or, more likely, H6K procurement schedule will be drawn out a little bit, if H20 development gets prolonged.

Hmmm ... Just noted this moment, they are experimenting with AAMs on these bombers??

Would make sense with all the super heavy super long range AAMs the Chinese are fielding and developing.

You could have a J20 or AWACS or conventional fighters locate the targets, and use satcom/secure datalink to upload target co-ordinates to H6 missile trucks for firing solutions.

Didn’t the US look into a similar role for their B52s at some point?

Rather than VLRAAMs, I think a more realistic and urgent need would be the implementation of triple-ejector racks on the H-6K, allowing it to carry up to 18+ cruise missiles if the development of the Sino-JASSM is smooth.
