Thanks for sharing Jeff, merci nice birds and you meet the beast...Well...it means I had a good day that day.
I hope to be able to have as many of those as possible!
and Jeff can attest that these two are actually very lovely in person, with skin as "smooth as a baby's butt!". They are indeed slick,,, almost "organic" in appearance, the skin looks kinda "velvety soft"??
oh and Forbin tells me the "Boss is Back!",, welcome back boss,, glad you had a fun day at the airshow!
The A-1 was (and still would be) one mean CAS aircraft. The Spad! and two Warthog's,,, ugly and double ugly,, at least that's what the bad guys say??
Remains 283 A-10 on 720 delivered in 10 years ! with also 50000 Soviet tanks... he get better than Su-25 no doubt but on 283 only about half have new wings so necessary fix that. The A-1 was (and still would be) one mean CAS aircraft.
It carried a LOT of ordinance and it could loiter for long periods of time.
IMHO, the A-1 Skyraider was like the utlimate World War II fighter-bomber technology...it first flew right at the end of the war in 1945.
But it was used into the mid-1980s...and that was because, like the A-10, the troops loved it. But by the time it was released, the full build run of over 750 A-10 were complete and it was doing an even better job, so they retired her then.
But, quite frankly, the A-1 could still be used today if it were needed.
Do not get me wrong, the A-10 is the ultimate development of the entire CAS idea IMHO...and we should keep using them too, into the 2030s and beyond if necessary. Heck, they have already been serving forty years, from 1977.
But why replace something that does what it does so well?
Anyhow, it was really neat to see the two flying together.
