The use of a 40mm round is not like that of a 5.56 or 12.7( fifty caliber) round at close range it does direct fire but at longerrange it is meant to arch like a mortar. the advantage of the 25mm round is that it fires much more like a fifty caliber ot 5.56 mm giving a much flatter trajectory. although it clacks the larger yeald of the 40mm the 25 mm offers a much more accuret impact. does this mean that the 25mm is better or worse than the 40mm? not really it all depends on the mission.
ok looking over the posts i see some updates are in need. so here goes.
XM29 status: suspended pennding fearther research. Due to the weight of 18 Lb's in it's last form the project was broken in to two sub projects. XM8 being the KE or 5.56mm carbine and XM25 being the Airbersting Grenade launcher.
XM25 Status: active uses 25mm rounds to offer the airburst capibility of the XM29
XM8 status: Frozen
the Xm8 got the army in trouble as to it's bidding after Colt manufaturing went crying like a little Be-atch to it's conneticut congressman. it also took losses due to the resuilts of the SCAR project outcome with FNH winning approvel. is XM8 dead? not realy as the Army is going to do a new open bidding evaluation. of which HK the original XM8 bider is hedging it's bets with the HK416. with the new 6.8 SPC remington carrtrage and other new improvments the XM8 may have a bright future still.
XM320 status: aproved. the XM320 is the 40mm grenade launcher of the XM8
XM109 Status: Develupmental, the XM109 is a 25mm veriation of the M107 aka M82A1 12.7 mm Barret anti-material rifle it fires the same rounds as the XM307
XM307 Satus: Active.
XM312 status: Active. the 12.7 mm variation of the XM307
