Election strategy. Every candidate wannabe in the GOP are dying to outdo the others on who's the bigger China-hawk. Trump differentiates himself from the herd by speaking to a more sober view of China. At the same time, nobody can argue he wasn't "tough" with China during his term.

This way, Trump stays politically flexible and receives votes from both moderates and extremists.

Believe? All Chinese citizens know where Comrade Trumps heart truly lies. He has been wearing his iconic red tie (红领巾) and going on stage to profess his love for China for over 7 years now.

I think Trump is a believer that there is no such thing as bad publicity as long as he gets some name recognition.
