France to build large new nuclear aircraft carrier

France has decided to build a new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Weighing 78,000 tons, it will be larger than the Charles de Gaulle. Besides the US, France is the only other country in the world to operate a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

Despite this achievement, France is heavily criticized for not following the "rule of 3," which states that "to have 1, you need to have 3."

It is a vanity procurement project and not a serious military purchase. Even though the UK only has two, the maintenance schedule is structured such that 1 aircraft carrier will always be available and this was a consideration during the design phase.
