France’s New Submarine Will Be Even Quieter Than The Ocean
French-Navy-SNLE-3G-Submarine-Cutaway-770x410.jpg.webp

The French Navy's new strategic submarine, SNLE-3G is one of a new breed of Western ballistic missile submarines. Together with the U.S. Navy's Columbia-class and the Royal Navy's Dreadnought it will be particularly stealthy. Its noise levels will be lower than the surrounding ocean making it very hard to detect. Combined with a host of new technologies this should ensure its survivability against future threats.

I really like the updated look of the new intermediate size frigate for the French Navy. About the same size as the Type 054As and sporting a 4-panel GaN S-band AESA radar, bow sonar, towed array sonar, 8 ASCMs, up to 32 VLS, torpedo launchers, a 76mm gun and a dedicated FCR radar to go with it, 20mm RWS guns, and the list goes on ... Would this be the first 21st century naval vessel that adopts the tumblehome hull design after the Zumwalt?

How cool is that, talking with Chief of Staff of French Navy

It seems like France is now trying to find it's way in the reshaping landscape of Indo-Pacific region with concrete plans for the near future modernization of it's military assets placed there. Pretty stressful I assume in the past 5 years and coming decade.

The FTI Belh@rra frigate uses German British propulsion (MTU series 8000).

These are to be installed in the French Navy's five new FTI-type frigates (Frégates de Taille Intermédiaire – medium-sized frigates) from 2023 onwards. The engines are due to ship between the end of 2020 and 2027.

Knut Müller, Head of Marine & Government Business at MTU, said: "We are proud to have succeeded in convincing Naval Group and the French Navy of the merits of our new engine, and to have the opportunity of powering these leading-edge vessels with their all-new design."With the 16V 8000 engine, MTU has expanded its portfolio of well-proven marine engines in the very high power class. The Series 8000 now covers the power range from 7,200 to 10,000 kW.
