Faster pace of modernizing tanks

What about Vladivostok?

It's directly open to the Sea of Japan sure, but in terms of facility China will need to pump tons of money to bring it up to standard, not to mention with the entire Korea Peninsula jutted between it and the nearest Chinese port, it's quite a difficult place to defend by naval standard.

I was wondering what they were thinking about Vladivostok, not its relative merits to China - all of this discussion is kinda pointless since nobody is going to start a war of conquest in this day and age and certainly not against Russia.

I find all the talk about Siberia and Far East and the ernest discussion of whether it would be useful to be rather pointless - no territorial change on that scale will happen in the foreseeable future.

Yeah, the day these things change is when Japan finally got those 4 islands next to Hokkaido back...

Siberia and Far East will be within China's economic sphere of influence at minimum.

More like maximum. Economic sphere of influence means relatively little these days anyway. Most of ASEAN and Taiwan are far more under China's spells than Asiatic Russia ever is and watch them flip China off with impunity.

I know people don't read the ground forces section as much as air force and navy, but you guys seem totally off topic here...

Well, people say that US have 8000 abrams, but it cost a lot to maintain such a fleet of tank. The 1st and 2nd generation of tanks in China is more like a mobile artillery that would provide more protection than IFV. I think investing in Airforce and Navy is the main priority as you want to denied enemy from landing and use air power to support 1st generation to modern tank.

The US Army store thousands of surplus tanks in the desert, and the cost is relatively low. However, it cost in other ways. If you store the tanks without upgrading at least some every year, you cannot keep the tank factory operational. Upgrades cost money, keeping the factory operational cost money, shutting down the factory cost money, and re-activating the factory later also cost money.
