Guys, remember the rules.

Discussions of nuclear war are prohibited.

I simply recommended a book that is a good read and gives a great history of the War...and does a very good job presenting both sides.

Please stop the discussion of nuclear war.

Besides, it is absolutely ludicrous and a conspiracy theory to believe for an instant that England would have nuked Argentina over those islands in any case.

As it was, they showed they could take them conventionally...but the Argentines...even at max range for the A-4s, gave England a LOT MORE FIGHT than it thought it was going to get.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION

DDGs

Note : The SAM Sea Dart was anti-ships capable but with a very small warhead 11 kg ( MM 38/AM-39 165 kg a difference ) not sea skimming but supersonic.

Bristol unique the more big arrived in Rft leading a TF the better armed for AAW with 38 missiles but few versatile don't have hangar for ASW helos however Ikara.
GB Bristol.jpg

Sheffield cheaper variant of Bristol smaller " only " 22 Sea Dart but versatile with a helo for ASW helo.
5 engaged Sheffield, Coventry, Glasgow, Exeter, Cardiff

GB Sheffield.jpg

County first British DDG armed with old Sea Slug less capable than Sea Dart clearly for the rest same remarks than for Sheffields but these batch 2 ( batch 1 retired ) have 4 MM-38 replacing a turet, the Wessex MK 3 few capable vs Submarines.
2 engaged : Antrim and Glamorgan

I built my Illustrious thinking of the Falklands, even though I built it out in ins newer refit configuration.

Just the same, her commissioning was pushed up three months early and was rushed into effect because of the Falklands War of 1982 with Argentina over the Falkland Islands which the Argentines had occupied and which the United Kingdom sailed to take back.

Illustious' sister ship, the HMS Invincible, R05, had been sent with the task force to the southern Atlanitc Ocean to implement that strategy, and for which the Illustrious would stand as a back-up and replacement if the Illustrious were damaged, or as a relief during or at the end of the war.

After the fighting, until the RAF airfield on the Falkland Islands was repaired, air defense of the area was the responsibility of the Fleet Air Arm. Once Illustrious relieved the Invincible (the Hermes had already departed fro England) in August of 1982, the 809 Naval Air Squadron embarked on the Illustrious provided this air defense coverage.

In march of 1983, Rear Admiral Derek Reffell commanded the relief task group from Illustrious .and with the RAF airfield then repaired, Illustrious returned to the UK and was formally commissioned on 20 March 1983 into the Royal Navy.

I sure miss these vessels. They were not huge. They were not overpowering...but they were capable, and the RN sailors kept them completely squared away.

Possible do more fast and much in War time or even Crisis time.

After they build a big air base to Mount Pleasant hosting F-4s after Tornados F2/3 and now a flight of 4 Typhoon with in more a A-330MRTT, a C-130 and Sea Kings for SAR.

For Weather during this campaign, very difficult, cold températures coz in autumn in the far South, rough sea and some days impossible air operations.
