The United Kingdom’s new F-35 multirole combat jets have used their vertical landing capability to land on new Vertical Landing Pads (VLPs) at RAF Marham for the first time, the Ministry of Defence said in a July 25 release.

To support the aircraft’s short-takeoff/vertical-landing (STOVL) capability, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation is building three VLPs through its contractors, a joint venture between Galliford Try and Lagan Construction, at RAF Marham. The Norfolk site is the main operating base for the F-35 in the United Kingdom.

The F-35’s STOVL capability will provide operational flexibility including landing on the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. Initial flight trials of the F-35 Lightning aircraft from HMS Queen Elizabeth are on track for this year, allowing a coherent build-up toward delivering a carrier strike capability for the United Kingdom from 2020.

Construction presented a significant engineering challenge. Due to standard concrete not being suitable, the design team had to source special materials from Germany to make a concrete that has the ability to withstand the high temperatures created by aircraft engines. Without this there would be a risk of cracking that, in turn, could present significant risk to the aircraft. This was the first time this material has been used outside the United States and required a rigorous testing process to ensure the landing pads were fit for purpose.

“Vertical landing is a really exciting military capability and from an infrastructure perspective it’s been fascinating to be involved in the design and construction process,” said Lt. Col. Ian Jenkins, Defence Infrastructure Organisation project manager for the VLPs. “It was really exciting and rewarding to see an F-35 landing on the first vertical landing pad to be finished and I look forward to seeing more as we continue to work on other infrastructure upgrades required for the F-35s.”

Each landing pad measures 67 meters long and 67 meters wide, with a central landing area of 30.5 meters by 30.5 meters. Four F-35B Lightning aircraft arrived at their new home at RAF Marham on June 6, starting the build-up of the newly reformed 617 Squadron in the United Kingdom. The successful first use of these new VLPs is another step closer towards successfully reaching initial operating capability for the United Kingdom by the end of the year.

Vastly more interesting for those of us who love this sneaky little raptor, for those who design/build it, buy it, and fly it! LOL face it, your a ship guy, not a "fly boy"..... its fun to see our partners actually buying an effective and stealthy multi-role fighter that has STOVL capability, that will make the QE and Prince of Whales a force to be reckoned with, while providing a very effective tool for securing their own airspace.

Without an air-wing those two state of the art vessels are akin to the "love-boat", LOL

absolutely, its not hard to carry the water for the F-35, its very stealthy and "turns on a dime", watch the A model turn nearly a 160+ degrees as it comes blowing back into "air show center"! Lots of vapor, and no doubt a very high G loading, maybe you could post the video, I believe its by someone named Elwin, actually there are several videos of the A model strutting its stuff at Farnborough! it is impressive

LOL for me an air show means the Frolov chakra, the Pugachyov cobra and stuff

but I liked the square loop by an F-35 in Paris last year, remember?

quickly found it now: Jun 19, 2017

Sure, I like Cobra's, heck I like the Chakra as well, remember our old buddy from Mexico City was a tremendous fan of the Rooshians and their airshow antics?? saying the J-20 was sub-par because he hadn't seen it do a "cobra"?

Anyway, remember the F-35 does everything it does with very sound aerodynamics, no OVT to cover up your lack of lift and airspeed,,, all on aerodynamic lift, and yes I realize the Flanker will do that as well, but OVT is the "Ace in the Hole!"

I'm a non-expert (LOL) so to me an F-35 'barely moves' during an airshow if you know what I mean

Heh! Heh!, that last turn would put 99% of SDF members to "SLEEP"! I'm not exaggerating, that's a very HIGH G hard left, like the Flanker demo, its actually nearly a complete 180 degree turn on a dime,,,, this is a much tougher routine than it looks like, that last turn and then very high angle climb takes lots of lift and thrust,,even an F-14 or F-15 would "eat your lunch"!

A Flanker or F-18 might get you halfway there,,, remember the SU-35 can do this with OVT, I doubt it would be nearly this happy on aerodynamic lift alone, but the Flanker is a very robust lifter,,, LOL!

Amen to that. I tell you that final tight turn and then steep climb shows offf some amazing High-G and power capabilities for the Alpha model.
