Re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

The Israelis have many options apart from China if they go for a JV option. There's the AMCA program where the Israelis can help get an export version up and running. There's the Turkish program which hasn't even begun yet. They can always get a new program running with the French. They can make an export version of the PAKFA with Russia and India.

The US is paying for the Israeli F-35s out of their aid money, so it's going to be really difficult to get out of it.

There are always other options but none at the moment are even close to being as mature as the F-35.

Is this true...anybody?

The F-35 program continues to work through a litany of problems, but this one is almost laughable. According to the USAF, the troubled fighter cannot use gas from standard green colored USAF fuel trucks if it has been sitting in the sun. Considering that these jets will most likely find themselves operating in the desert or in somewhere in the scorching Pacific, this is a big problem.

Sadly, the answer for the F-35's fuel finicky conundrum, one of many heat related issues with the jets since their testing began, is being addressed outside of the F-35 aircraft itself, in the form of repainting standard USAF fuel trucks with bright white solar reflective paint.

Clearly it is not tactical in any way to be driving a giant white potential fuel-bomb around a battle zone. This is especially true considering that the F-35B variant is supposed to operate 'forward' from austere fields. Still, the solar reflective paint job, that costs around four grand for each truck, seems to be less expensive than fixing the issue on the jet itself, as there is no word of that happening.....

When I read the article, the insightful piece in my view is towards the end of the article (second last paragraph) which sums up the reason for the problem and I quote "F-35 channels its strong thermal loads, accumulated by the powerful avionics and sub-systems on-board, as well as the engine, into its fuel. So really, the fuel works as a giant heat sink." This affirms essentially what the strength of the F-35 will be (not in aerodynamics terms) but that it is a flying electronic monster.

Luke AFB reportedly got the idea from Edwards AFB in California, where Air Force personnel first discovered the problem some time ago

but is it a credible source?

but now I found at the webpage of Luke AFB this:

F-35 temperature problems are well known fact . There were rumors floating few years ago it could not operate its avionics at full strength with low fuel (below 25% ) or in hot desert climate . Then they disappeared , so I thought problem was solved . Apparently it is not .

What's not being reported is that other fighters are just as sensitive to fuel temperatures. The Harrier for one, is equally as sensitive as the Pegasus engine has a threshold on fuel temperature.

In the end, not a major concern. It's paint fuel trucks in a less heat absorbent colour, or pick up a GSA catalog and get yourself a couple of truck tents to park trucks under. No big deal.

Harrier didn't use fuel as a heat sink for its avionics . Therefore, Harrier could operate with nearly empty tanks, F-35 apparently cannot .

I think some of you guys misunderstood my joke. The post isn't meant to be serious.
