Italy begins receiving new maritime patrol Aircraft
The Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana: AMI) has received into service the first two of four Alenia ATR 72 maritime patrol aircraft, Leonardo-Finmeccanica announced on 13 December
The twin-turboprop aircraft, designated P-72A in AMI service, are to be used for maritime patrol, long-range search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface vessel warfare (ASuW), counter-narcotics and people smuggling, counter-piracy, protection of Italy's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone, and for disaster relief.
Procured in 2014 to replace the ageing Bréguet Atlantic 1s that are reaching the end of their operational lives, deliveries of the four new aircraft are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017. IHS Jane's understands the four P-72As are to be an interim replacement for the Atlantic 1s, with a full replacement likely to be procured sometime after 2020.
The P-72A is built around Leonardo-Finmeccanica's Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance (ATOS) mission system, which features touch-screen multifunctional display (MFD) units. It also integrates a Star Safire HD electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) turret, Leonardo Airborne and Space Systems' Seaspray 7300 active electronically scanned array (AESA) surveillance radar, and a self-protection suite based on Elettronica's ELT800V2 electronic support measures (ESM) system. A self-protection system derived from that already fitted to the Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft allows the P-72A to operate in denied environments.
According to Leonardo-Finmeccanica, the aircraft will be able to fly missions lasting six-and-a-half hours out to 200 n miles.

First G550-based AEW delivered to Italy
The first Gulfstream G550 converted to an airborne early warning and control system by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has been delivered to the Italian air force.
The contract was signed in 2012 under a bilateral agreement between the Italian and Israeli governments, which also saw Tel Aviv select the Leonardo Aermacchi M-346 advanced trainer.
IAI was contracted to supply the Italian air force with two G550 conformal airborne early warning and control systems (CAEW), ground support systems and logistical support under a package totalling $750 million. The second of these aircraft will be delivered during 2017.
The new aircraft was accepted during a ceremony at IAI’s facilities in Israel, which was attended by the Italian ambassador, officials from Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development, and representatives from the Italian air force.
In addition to the aircraft carrying a side-mounted split ELM-2060 synthetic aperture radar, IAI’s Elta subsidiary has also equipped the G550 with an integrated electronic support measures/electronic intelligence capability.
The Israeli air force is operating similar CAEW systems based on the G550 airframe, and IAI is offering the same configuration to other air forces, negotiations for which are at different phases.
Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile completes long range flight test
The has successfully completed a flight test in the United States. The missile was launched from an Edwards Air Force-based F-16 over the Utah Test and Training Range west of Salt Lake City.
The JSM is a unique strike capability designed for internal carriage on the F-35. The test demonstrated safe separation from the aircraft performing a number of challenging flight manoeuvres, long range while continuously alternating speed and altitude, unique capabilities for this class of strike missiles.
The JSM is in development for the Norwegian Armed Forces and will complete the qualification program in 2018. JSM will have unmatched operational capabilities enabling the F-35 to fight well-defended targets across long distances. The missile will be integrated on the F-35A but can also be integrated on other types of aircraft. KONGSBERG and Raytheon are partnered to provide the JSM for US and international customers.
“The test verified all intended goals completing another milestone towards full integration on the F-35. The JSM program is on track to provide the war fighter a long range precision strike anti-ship and land attack capability”, says Eirik Lie, Acting President Kongsberg Defence Systems.
I'd love to see the US Navy import some of these...or get an agreement to license build them.
