Initially I believe it will be AN/SPY-1 coupled with SM-3 Block IB missiles launched from a MK-41 VLS on site, and using AEGIS BMD 5.0 software. This is Phase II of the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA).Jeff, out of interest, do you know what kind of radar, or other off site sensors, the installation uses?
Quick google searches seem to indicate some kind of AN/SPY-1, D or B I suppose, are used. I feel like such a land based installation would be ideal to host an AMDR. Are a SPY-4 or -6 planned at any point in the future?
Furthermore, do AN/TPY-2 installations (THAAD related) in Turkey or Israel feed into that system?
Anyhow, a great new capability coming online here that hopefully expands in the future. And what a visionary you are, Jeff
Phase II will upgrade to SM-3 Block IIA missiles.
The installation is is CE capable and can receive targeting information from other sources.
The Romanian site should be in service as of January 1, 2016. A second European site in Poland is scheduled for 2018.
Both of these are to be augmented by the four Burke class DDGs with BMD capabilities that are now forward deployed to Spain. They will patrol in the Med and the Atlantic and help compliment the developing AEGIS shield.
