I'm not sure about mounting SCUDs on Golf submarines, but there are other ways in which the North Koreans could develop a maritme missile platform.

From whatthis site is telling me, North Korea could hide missile launchers in crates in container ships. When they need to be fired, the crates open and the hidden No dongs, SCUDs, R-27s or whatever swing up on their launchers. A "Q" ship tactic. I don't know whether its a pipe dream or not. This site has got more info on it and on your Golf submarine theory. heres the link:

Later Golf models could carry two sea-based versions of the SCUD called the RN-14. I got this info from Rising Tide:The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines That Fought the Cold War. Really informative book.

I repeat later modle gulf do NOT carry the scud also is called the R-11fm
a few trial boats carry the SCUD the russian built no more then 5

the production version of the Gulf uses the R-13 which the no dong is based on

the Gulf 2 which is the version the korean got has the R-27 "serb" missile

Oh, well it can still carry missiles. That's what I was trying to get at. I know the Zulu could carry the RN-14, so why wouldn't the Golf?

because it takes about 3 hours to fuel before launch and that has to be done on the surface:nana:

the russians go ta replacement as soon as they could

To be honest, i've never really seen the Golf for myself. Does anyone have any diagrams or pics of this submarine? Or for that matter the Golfs in North Korea? I need to see this sub for myself so I can get some idea if it is capable of being the DPRKs first offensive missile submarine.

This is a simple diagram:

Thanks for the link. Hmmm.... the specififcations say that this thing is only aremd with short range missiles. It could be fitted with longer range SCUDs like you said, but that would require alot of engineering work. The standard missiles that were delivered to North Korea along with the Golfs only have a range of 530km or so, and to hit Japan or South Korea, it would have to get very close to the coast. And the Golf is an ancient piece of hardware, and it would be no match for modern Japanese or South Korean diesel-electric subs and antisubmarine craft. However, I do see reason for your concern. Two more questions - how many Golfs does the DPRK have? And are they Golf 1s or Golf 2s?

I believe that they are Golf Is. And they are getting assisstance from some Russian scientists. The Russians are beginning to find out about this and have arrested a few scientists.

Thanks, I never knew that. But even if the authorities do try to arrest them, the scientists can always defect to North Korea, which would give them more expertise.

Here are the few pics of KPAN craft I could find. They all show the same type of craft however, which is the mascot of my forum profile.

The second photo I think shows the DPRK PT boats that made an incursion into South Korean territorial waters, and were fired upon by South Korean destroyers. The boats were captured on film by a South Korean naval cameraman.

This image shows one of the main incidents between the U.S. and the DPRK after the Korean war - the capture of the U.S.S. Pueblo by KPAN patrol boats in international waters in 1968. The vessle was interned in Wonson naval base in North Korea. I don't know if it was returned or not. If by a remote chance anyone has any other pictures of the KPAN, please post it here.
