Actually, many wealthy, highly educated, and urbane Americans vote Republican. And many of them are hardcore Trump supportersPoor and urban Americans identify as liberal. Rich or rural Americans identify as conservative.
In the end, it's all designed to divide the working class and weaken their opposition to the ruling elite.
In the case of Trump, many of his supporters are highly educated and also extremely wealthy. The infamous Mercer family that setup up the meeting between Steven Bannon and Trump and thus were the brains behind Trump’s presidential campaign is a good example. Peter Thiel, PayPal Co-founder, is another example among many.
Their version of America is one of Christian conservatism, gun loving, climate change denying, small-government, and deep deep distrust of political establishment.
These cuts across rich or poor, urban or rural, and have generational appeals in American politics.
