well i knew the pay in the PLA isn't what you called "generous" here in the west. But they get free meals uniforms and accomdations. ANd the guy was a SR colonel which is the equilvent rank of your rear admiral lower half in the USN. SO which means this guy gets fair amount of privilages like higher pay, probaly a chafueler driven car, etc. But the point is, you joined the navy not to make money. Well you do have to make a living, but not to get rich. Ypu join the the navy to serve and protect your country.
That's all fine and good, until you realize that meybe your country isn't worth protecting. :p Then you hop on a plane and sign up with the country you think is worth protecting.

hey, yifyif, I found that this is the most mature post you ever made! Cheer!

im sorry if my post sounded a little immature. What i meant is that he is obviously disgruntled for being passed over for promotions even he had an better education than some other officers. And maybe he wants to live a better live in the west.
sorry about my immaturiy

No, no, yifyif, you don't have to say sorry. What I meant was that there are a lot of reasons behind a story. You've told one of them! What we are saying here are only speculation. The real reason why he defected only himself know. May be he is simply for the girl he loves (???), oh what a touched love story! Maybe he wants a better life or maybe, the worst thing, the US government pays him a big sum of money for defecting... only the people who involed know the truth.

i hope you're making joke. When someone enters military, he or she is suppose to love his/her country and want to protect his/her fellow country men, and he or she puts personal honor on the line. As long as your commander isnt making you comiting some crime against humanity. defectors, no matter which they are from and which country they go to, are a disgrace to themselves.

Everybody has "pie-in-the-sky" ideals, but the navy colonel had the insider's perspective. And he chose to leave and restart his life anew. If the PLAN didn't take care of him while they had him, oh well, their loss I suppose.
