harvard education as reason for dedection:confused:
Meaning becouse he cannot get it from PRC or that he was tortured by it, what...makes me wonder...

My guess is he came over here and got a Harvard education, met an American girl...and well, things took their own course from there. Being passed over for promotion provided the final excuse ...perhaps.

OTOH, it is also possible that the entire thing is an intelligence ruse to get him placed in a position where he can gather even more information. Who knows?

Sounds like a disgruntled colonel who felt he was short changed by the PLA... he already had some connections in the US, so he felt that he could establish himself in the US fairly quickly.

OK, since we are discussing further about this, can you provide more info about the defected colonel and the source of that news...?

People defect for all kinds of reasons, mainly discontent with their current lives. During the cold war there were people who defect from east to west, and some from west to east. There's even US military who defected over to N. Korea.

What I've found is that ideology is actually NOT the primary reason why people run over to the other side. To be blunt, immigration is a form of defection, you give up your birth country's citizenship in favor of a new one. Most people do it to seek a better life, or run away from old problems to start over.

If you want to look at it from a positive point of view, you could say that "voting with your feet" is a basic, fundamental human right. If you don't like where you're living, you're free to buy a plane ticket and move to wherever you want that'd accept you.

In the coming decades, we'd also see the traditional nation-based nationalism go on the decline as more businesses and its employees go multi-national. Formation of EU is one example. On an individual basis, I foresee a decline in the importance of "citizenship" for the cream of the crop -- multinational business owners and most valued employees that could travel and work from anywhere via telecommuting, or at any one of the company's offices around the globe. Those who are left behind and "stuck" in one location or home-country will be the culls of the new digital economy. Just my $0.02.

well, my guess is the main reasons is they are not paid enough (or because they make a serious error and want to avoid trouble before it is discovered). they are paid peanut compared to both their military counterpart as well as the private sector that it is not really good news for PLA no matter how you look at it.

it wasn't until the last 2 year or so did official get a well deserved pay rise, clearly too late for this instant since the article appears fairly old.

---

seriously while MNC may have strong influence today, they are still not the ones making the laws. if national interest is threaten, they will block and lockdown eveything. you see this is why even countries like USA resist total globalization. they will allow some level of "free trade", but never surrender the power to say "NO, go to hell!" :D

well i knew the pay in the PLA isn't what you called "generous" here in the west. But they get free meals uniforms and accomdations. ANd the guy was a SR colonel which is the equilvent rank of your rear admiral lower half in the USN. SO which means this guy gets fair amount of privilages like higher pay, probaly a chafueler driven car, etc. But the point is, you joined the navy not to make money. Well you do have to make a living, but not to get rich. Ypu join the the navy to serve and protect your country.
