Navy Recognition learned that DCNS will introduce a new submarine concept at Euronaval 2014 which be held from October 27th to 31st at Paris Le Bourget in France. The SMX OCEAN is based on a Barracuda hull, the next generation SSN of the French Navy, fitted with a conventional propulsion system (SSK) with AIP technology.

The focus of DCNS engineers in developing this concept was put on endurance and high sustained speed. We learned that the 4,700 tons SSK was designed for an endurance of 14,000 nautical miles (3 months autonomy) and a continuous transit speed of 14 knots for 1 week thanks to its Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system fitted with two fuel cells. The original nuclear propulsion system of the Barracuda design was also replaced with six diesel engines and three sets of Li Ion batteries.

Certainly blows Soryu out of the water.

Unfortunately for this concept, I think the more recent trend in thinking regarding Australia's future submarine, driven by budgetary realities, has been away from "super-Collins" to simply a Collins-replacement.

AIP supplements conventional power sources it does not replace them. These boats still need a snorkel for operation of there conventional power packs and circulation of fresh air. AIP doesn't produce air and water on there own.

PLAN may be interested for TOT ... lol ... really it's only a concept design which a lot of people can do it ... to make it happen and works as design ... is two totally different things, if everything goes smoothly (which I highly doubt it), it would have a prototype perhaps in 10 years time ... and at that time Chinese SSK tech would be much much better

Comparable perhaps, I doubt a huge step forward by anyone just yet. One of the advantages of this concept is it leverages from a major program. The Hull of this sub is that of the Barracuda class SSN. This is smart. If you really think about it all SSN class subs are really conventional subs with a reactor. All SSNs have a conventional power pack built in as a emergency system to pump in fresh air or help restart the reactor. By taking advantage of that what this concept is is a modification replacing the reactor with a AIP system. This means that a large amount of the systems integration is already done. Its just changes in the main propulsion system and power supply.

TOKYO — Japan has decided to power its new batch of Soryu-class submarines with Lithium-ion batteries instead of air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology — a move that could raise eyebrows after similar types batteries were faulted for fires aboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

However, experts brush aside those concerns and instead say this type of technological leap increases power and performance, while reducing maintenance. It also could make Japanese subs more marketable overseas.

Yasushi Kojima, a spokesman for the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF), said the change would affect the next four remaining Soryu-class submarines in Japan’s 10-boat class.

Senior officials from Australia, which struck a landmark technology agreement with Japan in June, told Defense News that they are aware of the switch to the Li-ion batteries and that they are still interested in pursuing Japanese sub-building technology, perhaps even purchasing Soryu-class subs outright. ...

So Japan is going away from AIP, in favor of the higher power density Li Ion batteries. While the DCNS concept utilizes both. I wonder if that makes the Australians look a bit further now, or if an austrailian Soryu could still be built with AIP.

Comparable perhaps, I doubt a huge step forward by anyone just yet.

It's a huge step forward in the sense that it's a significantly larger platform, which is exactly what Australia had been seeking to replace it's Collins-class submarines, already the largest SSKs in the world outside specialised units like Type 032. Soryu has been in the news recently mostly because it is the largest SSK actually in production (even if it is a bit smaller than the Collins boats) and consequently a much lower risk option than either designing from scratch or scaling up an existing design, as was done with Collins.

Unfortunately for this concept, though, what Australia wants and what Australia can afford are two different things, and more recently the talk has swung away from a dozen super-Collins boats to numbers and designs that the nation might actually be able to afford. We will know more with the upcoming Defence White Paper.

Auhh, the Soryu class is bigger than the Collins class in all dimensions(length, beam and Displacement).
