Came across an interesting tweet—here’s the gist of it:

Carrier-based AEW + heavy carrier-based fighters = the dream of every navy.

Used to be only one country had it (USA).
Now, only one country stillhas it (China).

Times change, tables turn.:cool:

Really..Perhaps you did not know several USN carriers have F-35C Lightning II and E-2D advanced Hawkeyes.

..USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), and USS George Washington (CVN-73).

He didn't say stealth fighters, he was referring to "heavy carrier-based fighters", hence why he used the F-14 as an example which is comparable to a J-15, which is heavy carrier-borne fighter. F-35C is not a heavy carrier-based fighter.

F-35C is not a heavy carrier-based fighter.

If it is not then what is it?

This is what it is;

The F-35C Lightning II is the carrier-based variant of the F-35 fighter jet, designed for operations from aircraft carriers. It's distinguished by features like larger, foldable wings, reinforced landing gear, and an arresting hook, all crucial for carrier landings and takeoffs. The F-35C is a fifth-generation, stealth multirole aircraft, capable of air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare.

A 5th-generation carrier-borne stealth fighter? I don't think one would say an F-35C is in the same weight class as a J-15 and F-14 and is considered a "heavy aircraft". J-35 is a bit larger than an F-35C, but its not like anyone at all refers to it as a "heavy" carrier-borne fighter. It's not small, but if it's considered heavy, then I guess this is just a matter of semantics then.

It is a medium weight fighter. Not heavy weight. For carrier-based fighter aircraft in the navy, general guidelines, based on empty weight:

  • Light: < 25,000 lbs (11,340 kg)
  • Medium: 25,000–40,000 lbs (11,340–18,144 kg)
  • Heavy: > 40,000 lbs (18,144 kg)
F-35C Lightning II has an empty weight of 34,581 lbs (15,686 kg), making it fall into the medium weight category.
