The ship was very close to the shore. The water in the foreground is shallow and having lots of reafs (darker areas) sitting on sandy banks (lighter area). Also from the video on weibo water is very clear. I can't think of any other coastal region in China other than Sanya (or nearby SCS).Strange ... I can access his post:

That is one possibility, but not the only, not more likely than the other. I've been going out to seas along various coast lines, seas in various weathers. I saw exactly that kind of coloration in water with zero cloud overhead.The darker area is simply the shadow cast by the clouds.
