The PLAN will have fixed wing airplanes (like Hawkeye) when CV 003 is in service. But we talked about CV 16 and CV 17, useable for training and to protect the aerea inside of Islands chain - and not for "out of aerea operations".
Liaoning in 2019 operated in the water near Guam as I know, which is in the range of land based fixed wing planes.

I wasn't talking about "out of area operations". I was talking about showing the flag and gaining the experience. I presume that even Type 001 and 002 are capable for that?

they can, of Course - but as I wrote in #4,668 before: I hoped for that years and years, i don't believe for that anymore, not in the near future

What I don't understand, why is that so? I mean, if they had some real combat role, I could understand that they are kept close to home. But considering they don't have, and are intended mostly as training and experience carriers, I can't think better way to do that than to send them on cruises.

Shandong, which is better suited for such trips with its Admiral Bridge, is still in the preparation phase for its service. I expect she'll do such training trips later to get to know navigation around the world, while Liaoning stays mostly in coastal waters for basic pilot training.

:) You should be a little more patient. It will take a few years before the first "real" aircraft carrier is ready. Until then, there are still plenty of opportunities for training without hurry.
