Giving SWAT teams assualt rifles and specialised training is a big improvement, before the days of specialised police units, heavily armed criminals had to be dealt with by thew PAP, which are not very good at law enforcement and some times would resort to things like general purpose machine guns and recoiless guns.

I believe the voulnteers that participated in the china vs America in Korea were only equiped with 2 grenades each and told that were doing the country proud.

Even the americans couldnt defeat the volunteers.
Indeed one type of attack consisted of a first wave armed with concussion grenades followed by a second wave armed with SMGs. But it's not true that all of the PVA were armed with 2 grenades each.

So armed police use Type 95 rifles while regular army use Type 81 rifles? Why they would do that. First, they should not use a rifle at all, a MP5 like submachine gun is more suitable for close quater combat with criminals. Second, it is strange that armed police get latest generation weapon while regular army are still equiped with previous generation weapons.
a large percentage of the army are acting more like national guards, upgrading their equipment is expensive and doesn't serve much purpose (how likely will they be used?)

here are some reasons i could think of in point form
1. this police unit are more likely to see action then most military unit :nono: :nono:
2. they are also gonna be in world public view during beijing2008 (normal to show off your best then your "average" gear right?) :coffee:
3. the beijing leadership is ALWAYS freaky about giving the latest firearm to units stationed far away; it is safer to give unit close to the capital all the high-end cool stuff 1st. afterall, the capital is MORE IMPORTANT. :p

don't take this seriously, just abit of fun... tho i could be right... :p

For your infomation
Hong Kong Police use it EU unit for most Swat duties, these guy a really well trained up in CQB and roit control. They have a shotgun, M16 and 2 MP5 in each EU VAN and each EU unit only have 5-6 man, that a lot of Fire Power cosider dat these EU respond to every 999 (or 911 in the US) call in the City.

The Hong Kong SDU are use only in the most dangerous or important cases and when hostage are involved. They are probably better trained then most SWAT team and other police tatical Unit.

They where set up and trained by the British SAS back during the British days and it still follow dat bloody hard Seletion and the hellish training pasted down from the old days. It especially well trained in the CQB as most operation would be in Urban area.

Well if anything of that happen, it should of been all over the news. But I not hear of anything yet. When did this happen.

Well, a TV show gave people about EU (Emergency Unit) and PTU (Polic Tatical Unit), but SDU (Speical Duty Unit) is kinda like a secret or something cos there isn't much infomation apart from a few pic now & then.

Anyway the EU and PTU both have enchaned CQB and Heavy Weapon Training (anything that not a pistol is considered a Heavy Weapon MP5, M16 .. etc), Crowd & Roit control.

To make it simple.
EU - Speical Patrol Unit, with better training and equipment, they usually the first people on scene during a Emergency or 999 (911 US) call, or to speedy additional presence of Force in any given situation.
PTU - A Company provides a ready reserve force to deal with threats to internal security situations and natural disasters. On a daily, non-emergency basis, the PTU is deployed on front-line street patrols to supplement District resources to tackle identified crime black spots.
SDU - is to deal with any emergency which the EU and PTU can't handle.
