What confuses CN PLA and USN observers is why they didn't know and admit it until now, instead of day 1

The "Hellscape" stuff was mostly a silly talking point. But so is the assertion that China can or intends to replicate what Ukraine does in the Black Sea (a far more constrained and benevolent environment than even the Taiwan Strait, to say nothing of the wider seas around it) for their own notion of a Taiwan blockade.
As usual observers who started reading up on drones yesterday chime into this topic making sweeping assertions about the future of naval warfare. Note how the actual navies in question behave far more restrained in what they test and how (Jari and Jari-USV-A being a point in case, there's no known association or interest observable from PLAN so far).

Two illustrations from academic paper(s) that explore the use of unmanned surface vessels and UAVs in cooperation with manned platforms to perform fleet defense tasks. Specifically, remotely controlled USVs and UAVs serve as anti-air missile launchers and anti-ship missile interceptors, with targeting information provided by manned destroyers and other aerial platforms. Basically, the unmanned platforms serve as a picket force to protect manned assets.
