Judging by the quality of the aircraft there, and the fact that the registration fee alone is $1080, it seems that the competition is really meant for aircraft companies. However, I'm sure enthusiasts are welcomed to join if they have enough time, expertise and money.

Which makes the problem to be at a higher difficulty level, unless they're allowed to use the less accurate and still building Compass.
I saw the registration fee as $580.
Might there have been university teams among them? A nice way to enter your students for a carrier in China, if their prospects in your own country aren't very bright.

It could be that the point of the competition is to build a UAV that's not entirely dependent on satellite positioning system which can be vulnerable to counter measure.

Registration cost is broken down into two parts: the actual registration fee, and the rent for the booth. The combined total is $1080, and I would guess that you can't pay one and not the other.
