Hmmm ... but my biggest question is: Are these really "only" enthusiasts, which show their RC-models flown on a maybe AVIC-sponsored "family"-day ... or what ?

Judging by the quality of the aircraft there, and the fact that the registration fee alone is $1080, it seems that the competition is really meant for aircraft companies. However, I'm sure enthusiasts are welcomed to join if they have enough time, expertise and money.

I saw the registration fee as $580.
Might there have been university teams among them? A nice way to enter your students for a carrier in China, if their prospects in your own country aren't very bright.

Registration cost is broken down into two parts: the actual registration fee, and the rent for the booth. The combined total is $1080, and I would guess that you can't pay one and not the other.
