ZHUHAI, CHINA — The first Chinese-made amphibious UAV has been unveiled at the Airshow China in Zhuhai, in the southern province of Guangdong near Hong Kong.

Built by Shanghai UVS Intelligence System Co., the prototype S100 Seaplane fixed-wing UAV can be equipped with infrared, optical and synthetic aperture radar packages.

A company official said customers interested in the S100 are governments with requirements for coastal surveillance or near-ship surveillance.

The S100 has a cruising speed of 185 kilometers per hour, an endurance of eight hours, a 200-kilometer range and a payload capacity of 240 kilograms.

The aircraft has received certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency [Impossible in RPAS configuration].

Airshow China, known officially as the 10th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, is being held from Nov. 11-16.

There is a glaring error with this report, namely that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certificated the system. Given that EASA has never certificated an RPAS, and is rather in the process of developing an RPAS certification regime, reports or claims to the contrary are totally false.

Note the close design parallels with the Alenia Black Lynx MALE concept from 2007, details and images of which can be found here:

Defense Update's coverage speculates Harrier III has parallels to the Lockheed Martin Fury, but indicates they are not aware of the Black Lynx design

The girls unfortunately don't come with the UAV.

Newest from DJI, the Inspire 1.
Its design is really sci fi. It makes me think of those turrets from portal, but flyable

DJI has to step up their game if they want to maintain the lead. I read they signed a contract in Hollywood to develop UAVs for cinema quality camera use but there are plenty of competitors out there.

The Inspire takes 4k videos, keeping up with GoPro, but as stock product. The downside is the flight time is only 18 minutes, down from the 20 minutes of their Phantom 2 Vision Plus. They need to aim for a longer flight time. Above all, they can learn a lot from their own consumer feedback and also try to be intrepid and become the Apple of drones.

I think they already are the apple of drones. Their phantoms are near synonymous with consumer quad copter drones.

I think the battery life has to do with the increased power demands of the new drone (especially their light bridge datalink), I've read that installing similar equipment on a phantom would lead to phantoms to have lower endurance than the inspire.

From what I've read, it is customer support they need to work on rather than product design or quality

They could try to become a one-stop shop for most kinds of civilian drones - from the hobbyist to the businessman. They have yet to make a drone for transporting light goods when other companies are already doing so and those companies may later move onto their turf if they don't move fast. This being a young industry, anyone could take over the lead once the sky is liberalized. So I hope they can become the Toyota of dones. DJI is a rare Chinese company that has successfully marketed a homegrown brand to become number one in the world. GoPro is number one but their goods are made in China and it has made its young founder a very rich man.
