FTC-2000. Check out the weaponsload!

However I think these weapons on Your images look a bit too much psed !?

How can you tell? The shadows and coloration all seem to correspond, given the resolution is low.

It seems like a reasonable maxed out load for the FTC-2000 and nothing extraordinary for a trainer/light attack jet.

I don't know for sure and maybe it's more a feeling ... but first You noted it Yourself the resolution is quite bad so a PS-job could be hidden quite easily and my main argument is: have You ever seen a yellow-zinc-chromate-coloured prototype during a test flight with exactly the same primer on all stores ?? To admit neither these 250kg bombs, nor the rocket pods or the PL-5 AAM are ever seen in primer !

I believe that you are correct. I zoomed in on the photograph and does appear to be altered. The shading is not quite right. This most likely a marketing photograph to show potential customers that the aircraft can be utilized as an attack variant and maybe carry more AAM with drop tanks.

The FTC-2000G will most likely be adapted to the client’s needs. Perhaps some even complained about the range and an experimental version with conforming tanks was developed (see above).

It will be like buying a base model automobile, all the desired extras that can be add….at a cost of course.

The original FTC-2000, according to the Zhuhai brochure, “can accomplish advanced training of the pilot, conversion training of the 3rd generation fighter and combat training of modified

series aircraft and possesses certain combat capability.”

However, the brochure of the new FTC-2000G (G=modified), adds reconnaissance capabilities to the list. It states the aircraft is a “light multi-purpose aircraft for meeting the demand of training task of fighter pilot as well as tasks of combat and attack in the international market. It has the characteristics of stable performance, strong function, low price, high benefit-ratio, and can accomplish medium/advanced training, tasks of combat and attack. And it can also fulfill combat area reconnaissance and attack impact evaluation with the reconnaissance pod suspended.”

“FTC-2000G appears the latest effort to keep the venerable J-7 (

“It’s an old design (looks like the old Super-7), and getting older by the minute. Yeah, you can put recce pods on it and other things, and I suppose (as a two-seater) you could adapt it for air-to-ground missions,” Bitzinger said. “The Chinese have failed to secure any export sales for the

Yes I know that this is just a model. But it could be made if there were a customer.

A quick comparison of the technical data reveals the FTC-2000G has more hard points and is heavier, but now has a shorter endurance time. That may be why the Chinese tested a version with conformal fuel tanks.

Hard to take any "modern" trainer seriously when they're essentially updated Mig-21/F-8s.

Well considering it appears to be a JL-9 derivative it will be powered by a variant of the Guizhou Liyang WP-13F(C) Turbojet. FTC-2000G appears to be a more combat orientated aircraft then the JL-9, I think there would be a market for it. Fact is the J-7 has still been finding a market until recently with new examples delivered to a customer in 2012.

Not every country is interested in a fancy jet with a complex computerized maintenance system. FTC-2000G will have a simple aluminum structure, simple radar and simple turbojet.

There is still a market for simple point defense interceptors like the F-5. Considering the F-5 is no longer in production and the Mig-21 is also not in production the market is ceded to China and the J-7 derivatives like the FTC-2000G.

I would argue, here, that if the F-5 was put back on the market with a simple radar, none of the complex avionics and logistics support it would still find buyers (Taiwan still uses the F-5E). Aviation fanboys are so caught up with stealth, AESA radars, supercruise and long range BVR performance that we miss the fact that for many 3rd tier air forces that it just isn't required.

If your main local threat is another 3rd tier air force or you need the ability to look over airspace violations then a J-7 derivative is perfect.

Hmmmm .....

Paris Air Show 2015: China close to first FTC-2000 supersonic trainer sale in Africa
Richard D Fisher Jr, Paris - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly / 18 June 2015

China has signed a preliminary contract with an African country for the first sale of its low-cost Chengdu/Guizhou FTC-2000 supersonic trainer.

First revealed as a private initiative by Guizhou Aircraft Industries Corporation at the 2001 Zhuhai Airshow, the FTC-2000 combines the engine, empennage, and mechanical controls of the twin-seat Guizhou JJ-7/FT-7, with a new wing and forward fuselage with side air intakes and a modern 'glass' cockpit. This enables fourth-generation levels of supersonic training at reduced expense, company officials claim.

The JJ-7/FT-7 is the training version of the Chengdu J-7, itself a development of the MiG-21. China obtained partial engineering documentation for the MiG-21 just before the Sino-Soviet split in 1960 and went on to develop numerous versions, many of which remain in service with the China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

In additional developments, an official noted to IHS Jane's that a 2014 contract with Zambia for the sale of the Hongdu Aircraft Corporation's twin-turbofan L-15 trainer was being fulfilled. Discussions also continue with Venezuela regarding the sale of the L-15.

Two really important news (at least IMO) ... via Huitong:

1. The CJ-7 = L-7 has finally flown (even if reportedly already in 2014)

2. There are ongoing tests with the L-15 / JL-10 to explore new technologies related for UCAVs:
