Shanghai average wages is around US$1400 a month. Normally, people only tell you their base pay. But the big portion of their wages are in grey area.

is almost us$1400 gross income including extras (these depend on how many cars the company sold, I guess) and assuming 42 hours long work-week (I don't think they can work overtime "just like that"), mandatory payments are quite low, but still $1k maximum arrives on the bank account of such a worker; elsewhere in the country, a salary of this type would be, in general, lower (if you worked in some small workroom in the countryside, you might get only like half of it)

If I can recall correctly, about 2 years back, the minimum pay in China's big cities was around 1500 yuan (approximately USD250) which should be way less than those in developed countries. It may not be so straight forward to extrapolate this to a country's average pay or cost of production but one get an idea.
Expert shipyard workers as needed in a modern shipyard will yearn much more than the minimum pay. Think of the grow of the shipbuilding industry over the last forty years and the need to attract the many workers necessary.

Imagery acquired by commercial satellite firm from October 2014 shows what appears to be a new midget submarine at China’s shipyard.
Imagery captured the vessel berthed at the shipyard’s fitting out pier. According to imagery measurements, the vessel has a load waterline length of approximately 35 meters and a beam of approximately 3.5 meters. Although Jane’s Underwater Warfare Systems reports China fielding midget submarines, I have been unable to locate open source reporting suggesting China is currently building such a vessel. Alternatively, the boat could be for a foreign customer.
Few additional details beyond those acquired via imagery are available at this time.
Midget, mini, or sometimes coastal submarines typically weigh below 150 tons and are operated by small teams varying in size. Because of their size they are limited in their endurance, which often means they are operated along side a mother ship. In the past they’ve been used for harbour penetration, concealed attacks on individual ships, or for reconnaissance purposes functioning as a . Most of our modern examples—of the North Korean and Iranian variety—are commonly armed with torpedoes and mines, fitted either in the nose or detachable side loads.
That said, this vessel should not be confused with recent reports of China building a . That variant is said to support the Chinese equivalent of a “” (SDV). The vessel viewed above is not a SDV. Also ignore reports like .
Wuchang is most well-known for building China’s , and the novel vessels. The shipyard is often photographed but no new handhelds have appeared for this boat as far as I’m aware.
