Interesting... if only I could own shares of SMIC or whoever is producing the domestic version.
Better to go work for the companies involved or start your own high-tech enterprise in China.

You would do much more for the Chinese people by employing them.

There's a lot of hidden talent in China, and their pedigree couldn't matter less.

Some of the best industry scientists I've met/worked with are from poor, rural background with no PhD.

China put 100% import tariffs on foreign DUV machines.

Looks like This time domestic DUV is coming out soon !

It's a good first step but they should increase tariffs on more products like the other semiconductor equipment and Apple smartphones. I also think they should add tariffs on other US semiconductor companies like Micron.

There are three ways to interpret this: either the 14/28nm node revenue dropped a lot, or the revenue for 28nm+ nodes jumped a lot, or a combination of the two.

There is a third interpretation for this: Huawei has never left SMIC as a customer, it's just that SMIC can not produce 14nm chips for it now due to the US sanction. Since Huawei is the largest customer for SMIC's 14nm process, the revenue from the advanced nodes therefore dropped significantly. Make sense?

Wait, isn't that the same as vincent's first option ("either the 14/28nm node revenue dropped a lot") just with additional details?

This is indeed interesting.
I can't imagine why they'd put import tariffs on foreign DUV machines if they didn't have a domestic replacement ready to be procured by customers.

@WTAN, thoughts?

@gelgoog

Clever play on China part but I pity Japan, now they need to JV or produced in China to stay relevant in DUVL.

No. The MFN tariff rate for lithography is 0% and the general tariff rate is 100%. The Netherlands has MFN status from China because the Netherlands and China are both members of the WTO

What if the shortage of high end chips in China incentivizes better software programming practices to get the most out of chips? Tons of computing power is wasted on bloated and inefficient code that is easy to write, but not to debug these days.

Then who is this aimed at?
