Rail traffic to Iran has doubled, and prices are up by 40%, as trade is diverted to overland routes.

The number of cargo trains going from Xi’an in central China to the Iranian capital Tehran has risen from around one per week before the conflict to one every three or four days since the start of blockade on April 13, according to people with knowledge of the shipments. Freight costs have surged, with quotes for shipping a standard 40-foot container along the route as high as $7,000 this week, roughly 40% more than typical levels, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they aren’t authorized to speak with the media.

“Previously these trains never ran at all in some weeks; now they’re fully booked for May,” said Altan Dursun, managing director of Turkey-based Silkroad-Avrasya Multimodal Logistics, a rail-freight booking agency that specializes in trade with China. Plans are underway to add further capacity in June, Dursun added. Each train from Xi’an carries around 50 standard 40-foot containers, he said, while a long-haul container ship can hold thousands.

Cross-border standard-gauge rail expansion at Manzhouli will ameliorate freight bottlenecks.

The project involves building a second rail line with Chinese standard gauge track at the border between Zabaikalsk in Russia’s Far East and Manzhouli in China’s Inner Mongolia region, the Russian Transportation Ministry said earlier. The new line is expected to increase annual capacity by 11 million tons by 2030, or nearly 50 additional pairs of freight trains a day, the ministry in Moscow

The Zabaikalsk–Manzhouli crossing is the busiest rail checkpoint on the border between Russia and China and a critical trade artery. Cargo currently has to be transferred between Russia’s broader 1520-millimeter gauge wagons and China’s 1435-millimeter standard gauge system.
