Chinese purchase of Su-35

It absolutely is mostly about "making a statement". Short of using the J-20 in these "aggressive" missions, Su-35 makes the statement that China possesses capable hardware. It's not all Mig-21 derivatives coming out to meet F-15s. Don't underestimate our capabilities and resolve etc etc.

I would pay good $$ to see a F15 vs a SU 35 matchup. In a non global conflict scenario of course!

Well that is not really the answer I was looking for. If China wants to engage in brinkmanship with foreign aircraft, they have plenty of aircrafts they can choose from before hand without resorting to the Su-35, earlier versions of the J-11s and the JH-7s have the requisite range and avionics that are good enough for brinkmanship but not sensitive enough to be militarily damaging if exposed.
The Su-35s are engine and airframe wise, one of the best 4th gen fighters at China's disposal. Not to mention among the newest, so it would make sense to upgrade them. But rewriting the entire OS on the fighters would be a huge undertaking.

Radar design and coding are hardly every revolutionary, and tend to take an evolutionary development path. So getting wartime codes and performance characteristics of even older radars could reveal more than one would like about later generations of radars from the same family or design house.

Besides, the whole point of replying to foreign aggression and provocation is to send a message by winning.

Almost all peacetime harassment tangles begin and end in WVR, sending JH7s up would only serve to give the opposition something to lock on to, with little to no hope of the JH7s being able to return the favour.

If Japanese pilots try anything stupid against PLAAF Su35s, they can pretty much be guaranteed to be locked hard and consistently.

That kind of treatment can have a hugely demoralising impact on the side receiving the persistent locks. Which is another reason sending up JH7s would be plain counter productive.

Another big con for using J11s would be that you can learn a lot about combat tactics based on how the opfor pilots fly.

With J11s, PLAAF pilots would fly WVR the same as all frontline PLAAF pilots are trained to. And that can allow a cleaver opponent to develop hard counter moves designed specifically to counter how your pilots like to fly.

Su35s would fly so differently from J11s and other baseline Flankers as to be effectively a different aircraft. So knowing how a PLAAF pilots would fly a Su35 in WVR would not give you anywhere close to as much knowledge and experience as the same PLAAF pilot might fly a J11.

UFC for national airforces. Dummy missiles simulating actual inventory. Actual wars and conflict completely banned while this arena can be used to settle military disputes. hahaha maybe one day in the VERY distant future.

Haven't been following too closely of late: couple of months ago there were rumours of PLA making additional Su-35 order, has any additional information come out about this?

Yep, no doubt it would be all in good fun, the SU-35 likely performing a little better in a close in turn and burn, while the straight old Flanker and Eagle would be an even match, OVT would give the SU-35 as distinct advantage..

Now in a real world serious as a heart attack real deal, my money's on the F-15 having superior radar and fire control and emerging the ultimate victor, picking up the bogey at very long range, (the Flanker is HUGE),, LOL

It is gorgeous, I could almost change my Avatar to "Flanker Fan", and to be able to play around and exercise that OVT, def puts you in a "Super Maneuverable" airframe,,

In the merge, the Su-35, SU-57, and F-22 would all be in a dead heat?? the edge possibly going to the Sukhoi?? in a furball?? I'm like Kwai, I would love to see the Flanker and Eagle "lock talons",,, we get a small taste of that at international airshows, the Russian drivers throwing the big Sukhoi around like a rag doll.. the Flanker flies even better than it looks.

These Chinese SU-35s are very nicely "fitted out", and extremely sharp,,, what I would really like to read a "PIREP", prepared by those Chinese Pilots fortunate enough to be assigned to the SU-35...

I'd love to hear their thoughts on the addition of OVT to their beloved Flanker....

One of the only drawbacks of the flanker is its RCS, allowing observers to pick it up at a significantly greater than otherwise distance. The detection range curve being an exponential function. Looks like Su-57 aimed to keep all the positive attributes but reduce that weakness. They still didn't put S-ducts into the design :/

Like I said before, the PLAAF should rip off the Ibris- E and install an AESA radar at the first chance they get, and re program the software so it fires PL-15s and PL-10s. To he** with what Russia will say about it.

They won't do that now, they're back in Russia's orbit.....
