When Huawei was hit by Google’s supply cutoff and its overseas business fell into crisis, the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS) stepped forward in a timely manner and became Huawei’s most critical technical ally.

Drawing on over 30 years of experience in operating system research and development, ISCAS joined Huawei in a desperate fight, deeply participating in the low‑level development of OpenHarmony, building the system foundation, achieving breakthroughs in core technologies, and leading the design of the driver framework, contributing more than 20% of the code.

It was precisely the full‑scale support from ISCAS that enabled Huawei to break free from the operating system bottleneck crisis and successfully launch and expand OpenHarmony.

In recognition of these efforts, ISCAS became the only Special Donor of OpenHarmony, and as a national‑level research institution, it rescued Huawei from its terminal operating system dilemma.

HarmonyOS PC now can run a lightweight linux virtual machine similar to the windows linux subsystem or the chrome os linux crostini container. Doesn't seem to support linux GUI apps yet.

This sounds like Hmos version of windows subsystem for linux a very positive development that hmos can run linux tooling.

What we(more I) really need is open harmony guides on how to run it on a windows, linux and mac virtual machines. So people can actually start tinkering with it without investing in hardware first.
