Chinese military exports to other countries

Source for my earlier claim that China in 2012 has become the world's third largest arms exporter. As the SIPRI numbers take the last 5 year period into account (2008-2012 period). But the 2012 stand alone numbers makes China the world's third largest arms exporter.

China surges to become the world’s third-largest arms exporter

With clients like Iran, Syria, and Myanmar, China’s arms exports are booming.

Over the last 10 years, China has more than tripled its arms exports, rising from the world’s seventh-largest arms exporter in 2002 to third place in 2012, according to data released today from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which monitors such transfers around the world.

Because the data collected by SIPRI show volatility from year to year, the organization prefers to analyze it based on five-year averages, which would put China in fifth place instead of third. But China’s climb has been steady since 2007, when it was ranked 11th in the world.

China’s growth in exporting military weaponry has been almost unmatched. Only the Ukraine and Spain have grown faster over the last decade.

Though China’s arms sales have grown enormously, its rise in the rankings has also been due to fewer military exports from Germany and France.

Rising any higher in the rankings may take a lot more for China. The gap between it and the next largest exporters—the United States and Russia—is over three times larger than China’s current level of arms exports.

The race for Turkey’s missile tender, worth $4 billion, is warming up, with China bidding below $3 billion and thus forcing the U.S. to decrease its offer in order to stay in the competition, anonymous sources have claimed.

Despite representatives of Raytheon declining to comment on the tender process, according to the sources the U.S. firm has been working hard to rehabilitate its offer for the Patriot system.

The protracted tender process for Turkey’s national long-range missile defense system was anticipated to be finalized during the Defense Industry Executive Board’s meeting last month.

For the estimated $4 billion contract, the pan-European company Eurosam, maker of the Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain Aster 30 system, is competing with a Raytheon-Lockheed partnership marketing Patriots; Russia’s Rosoboronexport, marketing the S-300 system; and China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp., offering its HQ-9.

However, the tender was delayed due to China’s move to haul prices down to almost half the original. The other bidders are now striving to revise their offers.

Another possible reason for the delay is the deployment of U.S.-made Patriot missiles provided by NATO along the Syria border, which could nullify Turkey’s own program to build long-range anti-missile and air defense systems on its soil, according to industry sources.

Meanwhile, many Western officials and experts say the Russian and Chinese systems in the Turkish competition are not compatible with NATO systems. The fear is that either country’s potential victory could inadvertently provide it with access to classified NATO information, and, as a result, may compromise NATO’s procedures.

Despite this criticism, Turkey so far has resisted dropping the Chinese and Russian

Can't see Turkey going for Chinese SAM system, many country's submit tenders doesn't mean they will get them, anyhow Turkey might even withdraw the requirement soon it's not even certain they will be spending that much, infact they have delayed their purchase of F35 now too, Turkish defence industry's is booming, national orders are pouring in and exports are hitting new highs especially in middle eastern country's and Pakistan navy is getting their new replenishment tanker from Turkey for $70 million

I really hope Turkey soon unveils its LPD/LHD programme so looking forward to it, word on the steet is that South Korea is the partner

I don't think Turkey will go for Russia and China SAM system but China is teasing all other tenders by dropping as low as possible to squeeze their profit dry even they get the Turkey deal. :p

I know that's the part I like! Deal or no deal Chinese on the scene is always competition and these types of moves is good stratedgy for China

Also think Turkey is keeping The Chinese in for exactly that reason

So, Turkey use China to get the better deal ?. Chinese is not stupid, I think there is still reasonable chance for China to win, otherwise China/Russia wouldn't bother

China is happy to watch competitor profit squeeze dry. Most of the western defense sector budget is cut, squeezing their profit will further hurt them and affect future RD of new weapon. Make it worst, cost over run, late delivery and further penalty imposed. Haha...

Personally I would like to see Pakistan order the 4 FFG and 6 SSK for the navy Along with 2 more Azmat Class fast attack craft

For the army the replacement for the AH-1 Cobras needs to be found soon, they are nackard after 13 years of war and replacing them with WZ-10 attack helicopters would be the obvious choice if we can modify them with specific systems even better, like the ability to fire Baktar Shiken and Anza missiles, not sure if it would be viable to get ToT but certainly having the ability to overhaul and modify the WZ-10 would be advantageous

For the air force We should order a 5th aerial refuelling tanker from Ukraine and buy medium sized transports from China to full fill the air lift capability along with additional AWACS

so I would expect orders for WZ-10, Y-9, ZDK-03, FFG, SSK and also keep working on J10B options for the future

I always wondered why Pakistan has not shown a greater interest in Chinese air defence systems given the disparity in size between the PAF and IAF. Surely some HQ9s, HQ16s and even some LD2000s would be pretty useful assets to have to defend against Indian air power?

There are all sorts of things that China makes which the Pakistani military could use, but the main issue always seem to be budgetary. There is a massive list of things that Pakistan might want to buy from China, but what systems can Pakistan afford to buy in the near future?
